IRVINE, CA, OCT. 9 ;> The California Racing Club Amateur Supercross Championship at San Diego is to be held on Sunday, November 6. 0 2 '- Ian Fitz-Gibbon (856) leads eventual winner Vince McMahon (334) inthe 250cc Pro class at Orange County International Raceway. Finch Junior Speedway National Champ By Scott Dalosio COSTA MESA, CA, OCT. 16 Thirteen-year-old Jessee Finch of Costa Mesa became the 1983 Junior Speedway National Champion when he won a three 30 ..., rider runoff for the crown in a race dedicated to the memory of the late Denny Pyeall at the Orange County Fairgrounds. . Finch made his first appearance of the day in event three where he faced 1983 southern California point Champiun Jordan Duncan. After a restart, Finch led Duncan into the, first corner. Duncan momentarily parked in turn two and dropped to third place. He quickly moved back into second, but by that time finch was long gone. Finch took the win by a healthy margin, while Duncan fell_as he approached the checkered giving second to Cameron Evans. Pre-race favorites SCOIl "The Giant Killer" Brant and Bobby Cody were to lock horns in event four. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell Brant as he ran away from the pack for the win, while Cody had an a1tercation with the wall on the final circuit and finished third. Brant came right back to score another convincing win in event five over David Busby and Tim Gewecke. Finch puton a wild last-lap charge but still finished second to Greg Hancock by a spoke in event eight. Finch was third on the final lap when he passed Darrell Anderson for second, and then charged Hancock coming off the final comer only to run out of time before being able to make the pass. Gewecke defeated Finch in an"allout war that also included Cody in event 10. The race had to be restarted after Finch fell of his Triumph Cub and was dragged down the back chute by Cody. He received a nasty looking burn from Cody's rear tire, but after some quick work by the ambulance crew, he was ready for the restart. Brant ended the third round by taking another convincing win in event 12. Both Hancock and Duncan held • ". " the lead but there is no stopping Brant when he wants it. The kid is good. Finch defeated Busby in event 13 moving him into a tie for se~ond (with Busby). Busby hounded Fmch over the first two circuits, but the future champion was able to pull awav over the final two go' rounds. Brant took event 14 in his usua I manner - destroying the field. That left the 14-year-old from Sparks, Nevada needing only a second-placefinish in his final ride ro become hampton. Gewecke also won his round four race moving him into a tie at 10 points with Finch and Busby. Busby took a win in his final ride guaranteeing at least a runoff for second. Finch outgated Brant in event 19 and opened up a two-length lead after the first lap. Brant, who was wearing the number 13 race jacket, seemed to be content with second until this magneto went away, as he was about to take the white flag. Brant hopped off his dying machine and jumped back on, but it still wouldn't fire. He dejectedly dropped out knowing that his chances for the title had vanished. Finch took the win in event 19 and Gewecke did the same in event 20 to set up an amazing three-rider runoff for the crown. Jason Chism of Paramount scored II. of a possible 12 points, to win the companion Junior Invitational staged for riders that didn't make the National. Jayme Finch and Josh Larsen tied for second with IO points. Finch then drew the outside gate position and was racing two riders who were celebrating their birthdays. It seemed prelly dark for Finch, but he managed to get a fantastic gate and lead into the first corner, and opened it up for a two-length lead on the back chute. That was the story of the race as he continued to stretch it out to the checkered. Busby claimed second with Gewecke taking third. As Finch approached the pit gate, he was surrounded by his fellow riders and received the traditional bumps of a champion. Results NATIONAL: "I. Jessee Finch 1131; "2. Dave Busby (13); "3.
