Holding third position for most of the day, the winners did not make their bid for the top spot until slightly more than an hour remained. Their strategy paid off as they eked out a narrow one-lap win over a strong DP Racing Kawasaki. A Parsons/Sellers BMW effort of 221 laps completed, put that team into third position, only five laps off the winning pace. Pre-race Javorite Team Hammer crashed out of contention after three hours, as a bail-off at the end of a back-section straight resulted in extensive machine damage and a reported broken collarbone. Team Hammer also incurred the ire of track officials when they cut a hole in a portion of fencing in order to extricate their prototype Suzuki. Winning no popularity contests with the predominantly Texan road race crowd, Team Hammer's only consolation was that their lOth-place finish was some seven positions better than arch rival Team Ontario. The team of Cheek, Rivera, Fox, and Turkington was fortunate to complete 133 laps, as problems with a thrown chain and a rear tire worn down down to the twilight zone put a damper on their performance. Quick Racing was quick to retire, since they managed to finish only one loop. They were edged out by Part Time Racing, who made two laps. KC Racing deserves special mention for the fact that they changed out the engine in their machine during the course of the race to enable them to continue. Austin's Team Silver Bullet was especially deserving of their fourthplace finish, since Mark Gerow, Richard "Timmy" Prescott and Paul Smith accomplished their feat aboard what was possibly the worst handling Yamaha Vision in the free world. This problem was a result of regular team captail'! Lonnie Doyle falling victim to illness and not being able to render normally meticulous machine preparation to the cause. Results 1. Friend, Stork strike at Spearfish By Brian George SPEARFISH, SK, SEPT. 4 Super 4 Motocross action returned to Spearfish Sunday with a special Labor Day Weekend event, and nearly 100 riders came out to compete on the excellently prepared course, which was run back wards to give riders an added challenge. Besides the trophies and payback, contingency prizes were awarded holes hots in each moto. Black Hills Yamaha's Billy Stork Billy Storie wes the Spearfish winn.r in both 260 and Open Pro . and Honda's Mike Friend were the two hottest riders on the track all day, with Stork capturing both the 250cc and Open Professional categorie, while Friend put a pair of moLO wins together LO take the overall in lhe 125cc Pro ranks. . Round one of the 250cc Pros was a hair-raising affair that proved LO be-a survival test as well as a race. Dave Molder took off with the early lead as Friend went down in the first corner, which allowed Stork, Lynn and Curt Hyde and jeff johnson to slip through. As Molder and Stork rode 1-2 for the opening laps, Friend blasted through the pack, and was in third before the halfway mark. Friend slid by Stork and reeled in Molder to batLIe for the lead, but both riders were soon on the dirt as after a fast double jump, Molder's front axle broke, sending him end over end. Friend centerpunched the broke bike in midair, also going down h;;ud. Neither rider was hun, but both bikes were out of action, and Stork found himself way out in fronl. The remainder of the moto saw Stork easi Iy take the checkered flag first, with Lynn Hyde, Cun Hyde, johnson and Brian George rounding out the top five. \ Stork grabbed the holeshot in mow two ahead of Curt Hyde, Molder, Lynn Hyde and George, but the h:;ld was sAort-lived as Molder worked his way to the lead by the halfway niark of the moLO. All Stork had to do was follow in a comfortable second to grab the overall, and he followed the plan precisely. As Molder took the checkers with the moto win, SLOrk rolled across second, but first overall. Lynn Hyde came across third (01lowed closely by johnson and then George, after Cun Hyde went down hard off a jump and bruised his hip badly. Overall, the order was Stork, Lynn Hyde, johnson, George and Molder. Results 125 PRO: ,. Mik. Fri.nd (Hon): 2. Jerry Wagn.r IK.w); 3. W.de Ric. (Hon). 250 PRO: 1. Billy Stork (y.m); 2.
