Bob Watson was the winner in the Open Intermediate division and Phillip Gleason won the Open Junior class. Wright, Henson, Ashley dominate Idaho State Championships BOISE, ill, SEPT. 10-11 The Idaho State Championship Short Track and Motocross races were staged by Boise's Owyhee Motorcycle Club this week- Robertson blasts away at Sacto night MX By Nuclear Neukam SACRAMENTO, CA, SEPT. 9 Jimmy "Kamakazi" Robertson anived a t the Sacramento Raceway Friday night stadium motocross races with something new and interesting tucked in the back of his van; .a brand-new, 125 Cagiva. Many a rider's curiosity was aroused when rumors started circulating earlier this year about the ultra-trick Italian mount. But it wasn't until Robertson appeared at the Raceway with a Cagiva that the anxiety attacks were somewhat satisfied. Speaking of attacks, that was just how Robertson greeted the competition in the Pro class. In the first molO Robertson moved -from a mid-pack start to put the Cagiva into second place behind Kawasaki-mounted Sean Connelly. Then, in moLO two, Robertson emerged from turn one right behind Connelly. One-and-a-half laps into the molO "Kamakazi" made the swoop on Robertson and [Jew to the win and the overall. Connelly took second overall. Daryl Yount secured the overall in the 80cc Novice di vision one class as the Mike's Cycle Kawasaki-supported rider followed Mike D'Agostini past the checkered in the first moto and then LOpped the Yamaha rider in the second go-round. D'Agostini finished thl' evening second overall. Results 30 PP: ,. sendy Goodenough (Hon); 2. Eether c.ndolo (suz); 3. Donne R.yle. (Hon). OPEN NOV:'. Rick Jenkin. (M.i); 2. Terry Pogue (Hon); 3. The track was greatly enlarged for the upcoming Trans-Cal Series opener taking place at the facility on September 24-25. The Mini Junior event went to KayleJohnson, with Jeff Orth finishing in the runner-up spot. The Mini . Intermediate winner was Dallen McKenney. He was followed to the checkered £lag by ALan Pierce. The 250cc Pro winner was Mark Rouff. first in the 250cc Intermediates was Mike Pryor, while Mike Hawks and Stuart Wagner were 1-2 in the 250cc Junior class. Terry Hampton took the measure of the 125cc Pros. Mike Knapp offered little chance LO be caught in the 125cc Intermediate division and DaIlen McKinney repeated a first-place finish in the 125cc Juniors. Troy "Red" Pryor and freddy Phillips followed McKinney to the line. The Open Pro class was dominated by Steve Rhyan, who traveled all the way from San Juan Capistrano to check out the track for the oql Law wrenches "; White Knuckle J win from StasiefslP end. Joe Wright (Hon) blitzed the small field to take the 250 and Open Expen titles at Sunday's motocross with I-I scores in both classes. Ricky Henson (Yam) blazed his way through a talent-laden pack to emerge Short Track Champ in the 250cc Expert Main, while running second to Jerry Moore (H.on) in the Open. And Toby Ashley, aboard a Honda CRBO, a BSA short track.er and a Kawasaki KXBO respectively, won the Mini Expert and 250cc B races on Friday night, and the Mini Intermediate class on the motocross track the next day. Those aboard the fastest motorcycles at the eighth-mile short track were mostly local boys, with only Ogden's Eric Saueruwaite (Hon CoAl causing the smallish crowd any recognition problems. "Lil' Eric" looked very quick even after just a few practice laps but couldn't match theexperience of Ricky Henson and Rodney Reynolds in the 250cc Main. In the Open race, Satteruwaite put his twostroke Can-Am on the line with Kelly Perkin's Maicoand the Japanese thumpers of Henson, Reynolds and Moore. Things get crazy in a hurry on an eighth-mile with 500s! Moore's Honda and Henson's Yamaha gave the guy from Utah another third place. Saturday's motocross was a fun affair but also down on out-of-town fast guys and spectators. One of the best races of the day turned out to be in the Mini Beginner ranks with Eric Hatch (Kaw), Keith Merrill (Yam) and AI Russell (Yam) towa,d the front of a small group well ahead of the pack. Hatch had the second molO won and, were it not for his wheeliefor-his-buddies-at-the-fence get-off would have. Russell came away with the win, going over Merrill (1-3). Hatch hadn't finished a lap in the first moto so even his get-up-in-ahurry second place didn't help him much, except he learned something not to do when winning! Results SHORT TRACK MICRO EX: ,. '1 In Argy II Cycle Park, located just south of Dixon, was once aga;i:n the site of the White Knudcle Labor Day Motocross. £lkn though the usual 500-plus-rider field failed to materialize, the 100-0r"~0 competitors who did show displa ed riding performances worthy of the ninth annual classic. The Open Novice c.lass had the crowd's attention as Steve Stasiefslfi, 500cc World Motocross Champion Brad Lackey's mechanic, rolled LO the line the same Yamaha 490 that "Bad" Brad roosted at the Carlsbad U~GP earlier this year. ' Maico-mounted Steven Law pulled: the holeshot in each of the three motos and the Livermore rider stayed in front to the wins and the overall. The first two motos saw Stasiefski out of the first tum in second place where he continued to the check<\!"ed. Monday morning, however, Stasi~,_ must have forgone breakfast and soffered munchie attacks on the line,as he tasted a lot of turf w'hen things:got rolling. While Law was motonng " away in the lead, Stasiefski slid iniOa bowl-berm, kicking up dust, wHere an alert spectator declared the dowrl'ed rider safe on second base. A lap later Steve buried his front wheel LO-the axle in a deep berm, but the bu.rly mechanic/rider just grabbed the hapdlebars while still in the saddle and lifted the front end up, aimed it in his intended direction, cracked the tnrottie open and wheelied off. Stasiefski tasted the ground only one more time and soon found himself threading his way through the pack. He followed Ron Rudi's Honda passed, the checkered for third, which was good enough for second overall. Rulli s~ cured third overall with his secOnd combined with two thirds the day before.
