Sideways sidehacks show their stuff at Canyon By Peggy Stewart PHOENIX, AZ, AUG. 19 For the first time in Canyon Raceway's flat track history, sidehacks raced Friday night on both the short track and TT courses. The five teams £rom the Ar~zona Sidehack Association lined up for the stan of the short track main event. The team of LaMar Bassell and E. Clevenger grabbed the holeshol. Side by side batding for second was the team of M. Curtis/M.Abbott, and W. Johnson/B. Myers. The Aragaki team moved up behind the leaders, but on the third lap, they encountered problems and dropped out of the race. With what seemed like a tail wind (rom nowhere, the G. Smith/So Henry team came from the rear and moved q uickl y into the lead. Smith aDd Henry continued their Cine style to take the win, with Johnson in second by a bikelength over the third-placed Curtis team. Dennis Parks went to the head of the class in the 250cc Expert short track main event starl. Parks, who had never won a short track main at Canyon, seemed determined to win the race. Suzuki-mounted Rick Williams ballied with Mike Stewart (or the second and third places. Byron Hopkins maneuvered by Stewart on the second lap to take over third. Williams, was hot on Park's tail, when Williams tangled with Hopkins; which resulted in Williams taking a bard fall. Parks continued his "hard drivin'" style to win the main. O£[ the line in the Open Expert short track maiD, Bob "Wildman" Russell led the pack into turn one. However, the leader coming out of turD two was none other than Tom Burcham. Burcham held Russell back until turn four, when Russell went UDder him to regain the lead. Steve Hinu, who rode his (irst Open Expen event, moved quickly iOlO third; with Paul Schoen in fourth. On lap number two, Burcham went high in turn three, which allowed Hinu to drop under him and take over second. Russell continued to pull away £rom the pack to take the win. Burcham came on strong on the last lap, trying to regain second, but to no avail. Hintz held Burcham back for second, while Schoen took fourth.
