Zifterkopf, Manning, Manneh winners at L.abor Day GP By Kit Palmer CORONA, CA, SEPT. 5 It was a welcome sight to see a heavy blanket of fog hovering over Corona Raceway early in the morning before the Eighth • (Top) Richard Sands (75) leads John Welchel at Saddleback (Above) Doug Toland (3), Todd Brubaker (930) and Jim Vreeke at Willow Springs. Poet powers to Willow win· ahead Vreeke/ Toland clash of By Lori Tyson ROSAMOND, CA, SEPT. 4 • .. 36 When the officials have to a k the riders themselves who won, that's a close race. And that's just what occured at the American Road Racing Association's Willow Springs meet in the 600 c Production class. Jim Poet took an easy win with a seven-second lead over second place, where the battle between Ontario Moto Tech's Jim Vreeke and Champion Moriwakil Jardine D-sponsored DougToland raged. After eight laps of dicing it out, the two men were so close that no one, including scoring officials and spectators, knew who was ahead at the line. So Vreeke and Toland met and decided between themsel ves that Vreeke had crossed about an inch ahead of Toland. In another close one, Vreekefought Todd Brubaker for the 600cc Box Stock honors. After much lead swapping, it came down to a drag race to the checkers with Brubaker, assisted by Performance Works and Racers' Supply, the victor by a very small margin. Right behind them wa an interesting confrontation between a new kid and an old master. Novice Martv Vogel was determined to catch vete- ran Jim Poet to take third, but his bike started cutting out on him and he lost some real estate on the last couple of laps and had to settle for fourth. Scott Harmala and Earl Roloff put on a how in the 750cc Box Stock, with both men riding bikes that were former ca ualties. Harmala's Interceptor had been nearly totalled and Roloff's "Lady Kenmore" KZ750 was pretty badly wadded up, but both were able to resurrect theIr machine and battled it out until the last lap when Harmala ran off the track in off-camber turn four, giving Roloff the win. Harmala was back at it in the 750 and Open Production as he took a strong lead and held it to take the troph y. Second place was hard fough t, with Ducati-mounted Tony Guest and Kawasaki pilot JeH Tuttobene deciding it. Open rider Guest took it, with Bassani-sponsored Tuttobene moving into a dice with Bob Reinen for third overall. Reinen was a bit disappointed before the race because his usual rival, Bruce McFarland, had crashed out of the race after leading the Open Super Street. So Reinen was ready for some excitement and Tuttobene gave him some. In the end, Reinen took third overall, with Tuttobene still taking second 75Occ. Results 600 SUPER STREET: 1. Jim Poet (Kaw); 2. The clouds kept the temperatures and dust down, providing a comfortable day of racing. Although the air was cool Sinisalo's CregZitterkopf (Yam), Yamaha Comp.lBDRC's Scott Manning (Yam) and Hallman's Bader Manneh (Kaw) were· hot. The first straddle-the-front-wheel start was the Open Pro class which saw Sunwest Yamaha's Troy Manning roost into the lead inches ahead of Moto-X Fox's Don Criewe (Hon). Zitterkopf was found in the middle of the pack. The two leaders duelled for the lead during the first lap, but by the end of the lap, Criewe took control when he passed Manning by doublejumping the water hole. There was an alternate route around the water hole that Manning chose. It took a fraction of a second longer but that was all Criewe needed. Zitterkopf, meanwhile, was on the warpath picking off every rider in sight. Zitterkopf took over second by the start of the second lap. The "Zitt" set after Criewe and the Yamaha pilot had the lead a half-lap later. Zitterkopf stretch his lead and ran away with the win. Ted Hoyt (Han) finished second followed by Cycle Works' Dave Fernandez (Yam), Wheelsmith's Roland Rodriguez (Mai) and Husqvarna's Brent Wallingsford. Both Manning and Griewe DNF. Twenty-seven 250cc Pros signedup to do battle and in the end it was Scott Manning who went home with the dough. At the start, Manning and Malcolm Smith's Vince McMahon (Yam) pulled away from the rest of the pack. During the second lap, McMahon slipped by Manning for the lead. However, Manning didn't give up. Manning stayed with the new leader and regained the top spot a lap and a half later. Spectro's Jim Tarantino (Hon), after a fair start, started to put heavy pressure on Manning and McMahon. With two laps remaining, Tarantino snuck by McMahon for the second spot. But, on the final lap, Tarantino went down and dropped out of the race. Manning held on to take the win ahead of McMahon, Suzuki Country's David Williams (Suz), Spectro's Marty Miller (Hon) and Sunwest's Rick Vander.ham (Yam). Bader Manneh (Kaw) led from start to finish in the I25cc Pro class but it wasn't as easy as it sounds. Throughout the moto Sunwest's Chris Lance (Yam) was glued to Manneh's ,l:ear finder. PJl's Mike Sixberry (Yam) took third while Quinton Smith (Cag) took fourth. Johnson downed but not out at 'ReDay H By.Kenneth Stein o'.l IRVINE, CA, SEPT. 5 Yamaha rider SCOll Johnson survived an early run-in with Maico's Micky Dymond to walk off with top honors in the 500cc Pro class at Continental Motorsport Club's IRC Day at Saddleback tod;lY. Johnson holeshot the first moto, followed closely by Ed Arnet's Honda and Dymond. On the second JaPe Arnet and Dymond tangled and Arnet went down. Dymond chased Johnson down and they hit the middle laps in tandem. Halfway througb the race, Dymond stuffed Johnson, who bailed, losing second to Willy Simons' Honda. Dymond breezed to victory while a battle for second raged right up to the flag, where it was Simons who held on. Dymond started the second moto by falling down, as Arnet and Jobnson led the pack. Dymond got back up in last place, and while the front runners battled it out, he began picking off the slower riders at an ina:edible pace. By the third lap, Johnson got by Arnet and held him off all the way to the flag. Third went to Simons. Dymond, meanwhile, never let up, and almost caught a constantly ',mproving Matt Tedder (Han) for fourth on the last turn. Arnet picked up a win in tbe first moto of the 250cc Pros, ahead of John Welchel and Simons. In the second mota, it was Welchel all the way for first overall, as Arnet took fourth for second overall. Cagiva-mounted Ron Turner charged up from an eighthplace stan for second place, catching Richard Sands' Suzuki on the 10th lap. Billy Frank kept his YZl25 at the front of the rest of the Intermediates all day long, coasting to an easy win ahead of Richard Fleming's YZ in both motos. Greg Trachy picked up third overall. charging up from midpack for third in the (irst moto. Suzuki pilot Lance Smith held off attempts by Trachy and John Ray's RM for third in the second run. Paul Burval had to fight his way up from mid-pack to take second behind Joe Merrihew's CR in the first 250cc Junior moto. He avoided the extra trouble in the second molO, as his Suzuki led the entire heat. Shawn Culp's Yamaha chased him all race long, but settled for second. Results 500 PRO: 1. Scan Johnson (Yom); 2.
