Two wins for Smith at Saddleback By Kenneth Stein IRVINE, CA, AUG. 21 Suzuki rider Lance Smith led every lap but one today at Saddleback Park, picking up two wins in Continental Motorsports Club's crowded 20-man 125cc Junior field. Smith jumped into the lead on the first lap of molO one followed by Anthony Magallanes' Yamaha and Chad Smart's Suzuki. Troy Allen, on another RM, started eighth but moved up to fourth after only three laps. Allen spent the next two laps catching Magallanes and Smart. He picked up some ground on Smith, but ran out of time before he could become a threat. Yamaha-mounted K.C. Maddox opened the second half with a holeshot, and led the only round Smith didn't. And where was Smith during that lap? Right on his fender, ready to retake his position at the front by the second lap. Smart started fourth, but caught Craig Whitney's Honda on the second lap, while Allen moved from sixth lO fourth. On the third lap, as Smith separated himself from the crowd, Allen moved up to third before he slid out. Smart then took second place. Allen rejoined the race and picked up both lost places for another 1-2-3 SU2Uki finish. The first race of the day saw Steve Adamson lead every lap of both motos of the 250cc Intermediates on a Suzuki. In the first moto, KTM rider Dave Berger held off Kevin Fringer's Yamaha for second. But the roles were reversed in moto two as Fringer held second throughout the race. Adamson set the pace for the day, as winners of the first motos won all 125 PRO: 1. Rudy Dickinson (Suzl; 2. Wade maintains at 8udSummer Series By Tom Griffith VALENCIA, CA, JULY 29 It was a long walk for the cheering throng forced to park as far away as the main gate for tonight's midway celebration of American Motocross Enterprises Budweiser Summer Series. The cheering crowd, estimated at 4,000, and an exceptionally large field of nearly 450 riders competed and partied well into Saturday morning. Attacking Indian Dunes'lighted International Track was the largest gate of Pee Wee racers thus far in the series with 13 machines topped by pint-sized owners. Jeff Willoh grabbed the first moto holeshot on his trick RD Racing Ylinger but was unable to finish in first as stylish David Ochoa slipped outside then jetted back inside to catch Jeff napping. Jeff settled for second again in the second moto after battling the series leader Pat Wade the entire race. Pat defended his series-leading position in fine fashion with a solid 3-1 ride lO first overall. Jeff Willoh, hanging lOugh on a 2-2 finish, copped second. Three groups of Vets gridded with maximum fields in each class. These riders from Bakersfield to Oxnard and Lancaster to Arleta no doubt got the greatest spirit boost from the intermission wet T-shirt contest. Randy Lewis, an Expert, managed to inspire his Kern Sport Cycle Husky from third lO first in the second molO and took home second brass behind a fine 1-2 effort from Dean York and his Maico. Intermediate rider, "Fifi" Shepard, and Junior Dan Ostrosky, both were class winners getting second breaths from the mid-race activities. Mention also goes to the outstanding performance of Dick Allen Yamaha rider Bob Dunham who recovered nicely from a first molO firth to third and fourth overall in the Expert class. In Junior Cycle action Joel Tokarsky rocketed up start hill for the holeshot in both motos but was buffeted by the breeze Intermediate Doug Hus- .. e,1O (Kew)' 3 ~AJmono(Kow). MINI JR: 1.
