Keese doubles at OCIRMX By Tom Corley IRVINE, CA, AUG. 18 A few nasty-looking rain clouds was all it took to discourage most of the regular OCIR racers from participating in this eve- RIncon rallies at Dunes Tn-Race Series By Tom Corley VALENCIA, CA, AUG. 21 Part two of the CRC Tri-Race Series was sponsored by Van Nuys Cycle, and with this episode came hundreds to the Dunes who ordinarily race at Orange County located tracks. One of these riders was joe Rincon, who traveled from Rincon Kawasaki in San Bernardino just to participate in this event. Rincon was one of the visitors who adapted well to the track and took home a first-place trophy for his 250cc Intermediate division two efforts. Along with trophies, the winners clinched gift certificates and bottles of oil from BTS Factory. Rincon put his Kawasaki out ahead of the 15-man pack in the first moto racing. He held the lead for four laps until Spectro Oil's Ron Economu pulled by on his Yamaha to take over the lead. Mark Parkerson, also on a Yamaha, managed third ahead of Mike Pryor. In the final moto, Rincon pulled· the holeshot and led it wire to wire. Once again his competition was Economu, but this time Ron wasn't able to work by Rincon and settled for second place. Ken Erb who had a poor first moto with a 10th place, improved his score greatly and followed Economu in third. A fine 2-1 tally eamed Rincon the overall win. Rincon and Economu were very dase in series points going into this race, but now itis Rincon with the definite advantage. The 1-2 tally belonging to Economu captured second overall, with Mark Parkerson, Derek Borg and Mike Pryor winning the rest of the trophies. B.j. Lehn is a name that is usually associated with the I25cc Novice class, but now he has proven to be a competitive force in the 250cc Novice class. Lehn just got back from Ponca City and since then decided to move to the bigger 250 machi ne. In the first moto he took the holeshot and led the race ahead of Rob Webb. While the white flag was coming out, just two corners before the finish area, Lehn got caught behind a lapped rider and stalled his Suzuki. Webb took advantage of this and took over the lead. Lehn got it back together and headed after Webb. On the corner before the finish area on the last lap Lehn zapped Webb to regain the lead and win the race. Webb settled for second place ahead of Tim Talan and Dave Warnjes. Results PEE WEE: 1. Jeff Wliloll (Y.m); 2, Peblo Ler. Jemie Wehy (Suz). 60 NOV: 1. Demon Huffm.n (Kew); 2. JoIN Jemn (Klw~ 3. The small crowd that proved faithful found the track surface to be just right for traction. jim Keese found the night to be just right for him tQ successfully win both the 125 and 250cc Pro classes aboard his Orange County Cycle/Hi-Pointsponsored Yamahas. Keese comes from a line of motocross racers; his brother jack was a top local Pro during the Seventies. Moving from San Luis Obispo to SoCal, Keese is out to make a name for himself and.his two wins tonight should help. With the opening round of 125cc Pro racing it was Honda rider jeff Frisz with the holeshot. Frisz held the lead for two laps with Keese on his tai I. Frisz faltered on a corner after the big jump and aJlowed Keese to take over the lead. Keese had to worry about Sean Corcoran, who then became the new second-place rider while Frisz dropped back to third. Soon Keese started to pull away, and Corcoran was being pursued by Frisz, who pulled up alongside of him while flying over the doubles. When they came to the hairpin turn, Frisz tried to pass Corcoran but ran into his rear wheel and fell to the ground. Through the finish line it was Keese, who proudly took the win over Corcoran and Frisz. On the first lap of the second moto it was Keese who got out of control over the stutterbumps and dumped his bike. Corcoran had the lead for one lap with Frisz after him. On the second lap Corcoran went down and gave away the lead to Frisz. No sooner did Frisz have the lead when he made the mistake of going too fast over the stutterbumps and lost his bike. Corcoran couldn't avoid the wild machine and collided his Suzuki right into it. At this point Dane Patad. with the words "Great Dane" on his pants, took over the lead with Keese closely following. Through the finish it was Patad. Keese and Frisz. Corcoran took a DNF. Money wise it was Keese and Patad. The 250cc Pro class wasn't as eventful as the 125cc race, but once agaiD it was Keese with all the marbles. Pedro Marcia took his Honda to the lead in the first moto and was uncontested. Paul McLain held second for one lap' but dropped back. By the second lap it was Rustan Yamaha's Ian FitzGibbon in second place with Keese,in third. Keese wasn't able to get a good stall aboard his 250 and in the final moto he was at the back of the pack when they took off. Through the first turn, though, he slid by everyone to take the lead. Pacific Coast Honda's Shawn Player was in second for the first two laps till Fitz-Gibbon bumped bim back to third. For the next three laps Player was in third until Marcia bumped him back to fourth, where he ended up. Overall for the night it was Keese, Fitz-Gibbon, Marcia, Player and McLain. Results 60 NOV: 1. II Several potential winners were in the 125cc Pro line up for tonight's OCIR motocross. hicluded was DG/Yamaha ace Todd Peterson, who has numerous wins to his name. Doug Dubach)s currently on an upswing in his career and in the past month he has won up to four events in a row. Then there was "Radical"Ron Turner who has dropped all japanese makes to st~le Italian with Cagiva. All riders were well matched, but when the dust settled there was only one rider who took home the top money and that was Turner. The holeshot in the first moto was taken by Turner. Hot for the lead was Dubach, who slid past Turner on the first few corners before the bridge. Dubach controlled the lead for all but the final lap with Turner in second and Todd Peterson in third. On the final lap, Dubach could feel the pre'ssure coming from Turner and he made the' mistake of faltering over some whoops and went to the side of the track and through the banners. Dubach was wrapped up in the banners but only lost two positions. Turner became the new leader, with Peterson the runner-up.
