SUDCO Pfetzing takes two on Tuesda, Cl<") By Bill Locey 00 VENTURA, CA, AUG. 2!l 0') So much for taking it easy the night before the final Qualifi~F. In an awesome display of two-wheeled talent, ValvolinesPonsored Rob Pfeting blasted to victorY in both main events on a fullJWXln Tuesday night at Ventura Raceway. Pfetzing now joins "Sudden sam" Ermolenko and Bobby Schwartz as one-night, two-main winners here. In Handicap racing, Pfetzing was second to Denny Scopellite in his hea1, while a pair of the Usuals Steve Lucero and Buddy Robinson -were winners. 'The-Flyin' Hawaiian" hll an easier task of it after Mike Faria was counted out on the twominute rule. In a wild semi ride, Ermolenko and Pf'etzing were neck and neck in third with one lap to go as things suddenly got hot for Andy Northrup, who ~s in their way. They surrounded him in lUrn three and sandwiched him in lUm four, with Pfetzing by on the outside and Ermolenko on the inside, finishing second and third behind winner Kurt Stromroer. Northrup had another tum-four bummer befall him later when he crashed on the last tum of his Scratch heat while in second. With the exception of Strom mer, ~ the I O-yard line, the other five riders in the main were the hot guys off t.h,c; 40 and 50.0££ the 50, Cook got the ~t start, Ermolenko dropped in be ind him, and they tried their luck ~ the outside to get around Lucero and Robinson. But Pfetzing, on the inside, had the beuer way and was second after just a lap and a half. He nailed Strommer on the second lap aDd won by plenty. In the consolation, won by Northrup, Shane McDonald crashed around turn twO while actin~ crazy on the outside and Scopellite laid it down expertly and quickly, and no one was hurt. In Scratch racing, there was far less drama. pfetzingoutgated and thrashed his rivals three times. In the main, Pfetzing, lucky tOO, drew the pole, and skated away shortly after the tapes went up. John Cook, also going for it, managed to keep it reasonably close. After winning his heat, Pat Hawley won the Second Division main by a wide margin over some good riders such as Larry Willey, Jim-Bob Kuhr and Randy Beddow, who splauered a tum-four hay bale. It was Hawley's first win here since he won the D-2 Track Championship back in 1981. Walt Farnum, local here, was leading his D-2 heat by about eight miles when he fell over in the last tum. Dave Wendlandt probably thanked him as he whizzed by. Fillmore rider John Aitken, a Third Division rider, was the only real casualty of full-moon speedway. Joe Bishop crashed in front of him, leaving now here to go except hard into the turn four real estate, suffering an apparent shoulder injury. • CONGRATULATIONS TO: WESCOOLEY, Team Kawasaki Winner, Camel Pro Formula I National Road Race, Sears Point Ca.
