Peterson scales to DeAnza wins By Sendee Peterson SUNNYMEAD, CA, AUG. 8 On a muggy, overcast day at DeAnza Cycle Park, southern California's top hillclimbers met to challenge an experi- R.ndy Bird took the Open Expert cl... n the A8COt Pro-Am TT. In the I 25cc go it was motocross Pro Scott Keyes who went wire to wire, topping Mike Drown and Dwight Wilkinson. In the Open class it was another follow-the-leader as Jim Lewis held school and had Dave Terrible and Bill Friant follow him home. The Open Money and 250cc Money both went off the line IOgether 10 put flatlT3ckers against mOlOCTOS5eTS with some very interesting results. Off the line it was Eddie San Roman, with brand new leathers and a new red Wood Rotax, followed by Bakers· field's Rob Ely and McMahon. Through the tight turns McMahon was in his ballpark and did some mighty fancy footwork. Comkng into three before they came on to the front straight, McMahon was up high on the berm passing everybody in sight. Unfortunately he ran out of berm, and where San Roman and Ely were down low and driving, McMahon was up high trying to kiss the wall while the other two were on their way. EI y got by San Roman on the third lap and McMahon made his pass on the sixth lap. They finished in that order. Results TT PEE WEE: I. Duetin SUlt1d (Veml; 2. Joey Win· _IHon~ MINI: I. S--, 34 Klatt picks up points at Ascot Pro-Am TT By Den Mehony GARDENA, CA, AUG. 5 The Dirt Diggers motorcycle club again hosted the combination Professional!Amateur TT races at lC. Agajanian's Ascot Park with a great rider turnout of about 70 riders. The weather was perfect and so was the track as Ross Klatt took the win in the 500cc Pro race for Junior-rankeddirtlT3ckers, while Jim Harrell made the tow from central California worthwhile with a first place in the 250cc Pro go for Novices. The Juniors and Novices each went eight laps in the heat rces and 12 laps in the finals. Those extra laps proved to be the undoing of more than one rider. Robert Land looked to have the 500cc Pro situation well in hand after an easy heat race victory, but mechanical problems had him watching the finish of the main event from trackside. Klatt jumped into the lead at the start of the final, but was passed in mid-flight over the jump by Land on lap four. Land continued to stretch his lead until the white flag flew, when his engine suddenly lost fire. Klatt took the win over Jim Taves. John Lundgren rode to third place over San Jose Mile Junior-winner Bud Carroll. The5OO/Open Amateur showdown, like most of the races, wasn't decided until the final moto. Rivals Jim Kessler and Skip Christy were tied with a win each, and those two dueled down to the flag in the third race with the decision going to Kessler. Christy finished second in the standings over Ron Bartels and Rick Hanley. The 500/0pen Novice score saw consistency payoff for 490 Yamahamounted Jim Lundgren, with 4-2-2 finishes and the overall win. Bill Bartels and Don Meiner were the principals in the Vets class, with Meiner getting the gold. The 250cc Combo was all Curtis Cannon's as he trounced Derrick Vandenhurk and Lee Lindsay in the final points. _. Results 2&0 COMBO: 1. Cunia C8...-; 2. o.rnct Yen.....UIi<; 3.... NindIey; 4....... S _ 6. Dan mental hill layout, designed to stop anyone from making the top. A series of turns were laid out on a ~50-foot hill with a loose, steep beginning, an off camber rutted middle and near verticle top. A similar S-turn layout is rumored to be used at the 1984 Widowmaker, so riders were anxious to see how much this would effect the capabilities of the high-tech hillclimb bikes of today. As the hillclimb got underway, it became apparent that the turning ability of the 8O-90-inch-wheelbase hillclimb bikes was not up to the challenge of the rough twisty hill and riders were losing momentum right after the first turn. Kerry Peterson's Wheelsmith/HiPoint/Tsubaki/Nipponden50/Works Performance/KRW/490 Maico and 1500cc Harley Davidson were the only bikes to crest the incredibly tough piece of real estate. Peterson powered his steel-paddle Wh.eelsmith Spider up and over the top and secured wins in the 500cc modified and 500ccexhibition classes. He came right back and roosted his big Harley to the Open Modified and Open Exhibition wins with one dirtslinging blast over the top in three tries. Steve Stith took his Wheelsmithl H i-Point/KRW/Maico to second and third place finishes in the two 500cc classes and backed them up with two second places in the Open classes. Dave Turner climbed his Krause Racing/NGK, Maico to the second place slot in the 500cc exhibition class and came back on his O.K. Manufacturing Triumph to take a pair of third places in the Open class. FIne rides were turned in by Carl Collier, while placing third in 500cc modified, and Dave Gestoso and Ron Powell, taking the wins in the 500cc Stock and 650cc stock classes. McMllen, Posca talleAscot Summer Series wins By Tom Corley GARDENA, CA, AUG. ! The word is out about the Continental Motosp0rlS Club's Summer Series at Ascot Park, and with this second event there were 15 classes full or riders. Over ~o 125cc Juniors showed up and two divisions were scheduled. Chrome Dome Racing Team's Keith McMillen, the only rider that has numbers both inside and outsideof his num plates, took the first division win. John Posca of Posca Brothers Racing Team took the second division win after dicing with Anthony Magallanes. In the first molO of l25cc Junior..... division one racing, McMillen was not one of the top runners but still? landed fourth place. Thousand Oaks> Yamaha rider Dave Jenkins led the contest till Matt Wallace slid his/ Suzuki past the leader on a cornel. Jennings placed second ahead 0 J Darryl Haney, McMillen and Marty Schneider. f McMillen took the holeshot and ( led the second race ahead of Haney .f· and Schneider. Wallace was run off l the track and got hung up in the)' banners. Ii Nobody could catch McMillen in first place, and Haney and Schneider) continued their close battle for second I place, ending with Haney in that position. A 4·1 tally was good enough C 10 give McMillen the tallest trophy L 'over Haney, Jennings, Schneider and I Wallace. :) Anthony Magallanes' white Yarna-· ha led the first mOlt> of the l25cc Junior division two contest. Mike r Golden was running in second ahead of Duff Whitman and John Posca. J Whitman fell and gave third place to Posca. Posca got by Golden, when a lapped rider fell and held them up, and took over second place. Magal- lanes held down first place ahead of Posca, Golden and Chris Micklos. . There was a new competitor lead- I ing the final mOIO.'The rider didn't even ride the first molO and he came out of nowhere. Apparently, Larry Benedict of the 125cc Intermediate class made the mistake of lining up with the 125ccJuniors. Benedict shot out ahead with Posca right after him. The Intermediate rider was humbled by fast-Junior Posca, who disposed of Benedict as they hauled over the double jumps. By the time Posca reached the back crash wall he was ' clearly in the lead. Chris Micklos was in third but actually in second as Benedict didn't get scored. Blake Vitali ~ was after Micklos, and he zapped him 2 on the straight by the doubles. As 1 they finished it was Posca, Vitali and Micklos. Magallanes got off to a bad start and lOOk seventh. Posca's 2-1 tally earned him the overall win ahead of Vitali, Micklos and Magallanes.
