Cooper claims SRA win at Carlsbad GP By Jeannette Fisher CARLSBAD, CA, JULY ~l - The 0-8Occ class started off the day's events at Southland Racing Association's Carlsbad Grand Prix. Ronnie Jordan OC') was leading the way on lap one and Steve Wamboll and Sloan Cooper followed closely. Wambolt (Dallas Baker Prod.) lOOk over the lead but not for long as Cooper soon moved out in from. Cooper was determined to keep the overall and he did. Wambolt was a close second. Jim Heck and Chris Bamsey had a bit of a race of their own but Heck came through ahead of Bamsey for third. They took first and second Novice. First and second Beginners were Masa Shibuya and Chris Holmes. Mark Heth claimed the overall vicLOry of the 81-200cc race. It was a well-earned win too. Ed Foland led the first part of the race until Heth overtook Foland for the lead. Foland did not drop far back though, he held the second place spot to the finish. Craig Lee took home top Amateur honers after leading the Amateur line throughout the race. Mark Vanscourt followed a close second to Lee. Novice and Beginner wins went LO Simon Che[(jns and Steve Riggins. The 250cc race got underway, and Randy Hayes led the pack with Craig Adams, Kent Pfeiffer and Randy Norman all wanting to have Hayes' position. On lap two, Hayes was still leading, Norman had made his way into second and Adams held fast to third. By lap five Hayes had dropped back and Norman had taken over. Adams moved his way up to second. The last lap was a welcome relief to some riders, but between Norman and Adams it was anybody's race. Norman and Adams rode without mistakes to finish in that order. They both had an enormous lead over the rest of the pack. Third and fourth who were Greg Fountain and Phil Morstenson. Charlie Conway (250) made way with the lead the first lap of the Seniors race, but by the second lap Lynn McGraw (250) pushed his way past Inw the overall position. McGraw led the way to the checkered and Conway placed second. Vern Heth moved up into the third spot from behind. The green flag started off the Open class, and by the end of the first lap it was Norman in the lead. Lee Scheffers and Raymond Cates were not far behind Norman. As the race progressed, Norman held fast to his lead and places behind him were constantly changing; on lap two Cates passed Scheffers and Chris Crandall followed. Lap three showed Scheffers again ahead of Cates and Crandall fell a distance back but still in fourth. As they rounded lap five, new-eompetitor Chris Howell had moved his way into third and Adams followed in fourth. The white flag lap saw Norman still in the lead and Howell and Adams moving in. The leaders came around on the last lap, but it wasn't Norman in the lead on the last lap but Howell who took the checkered with Adams right behind him and Norman following third. • I II' e33 II C !l C -l \ I ( .' -, 35 .
