Walker walks away with Aspen RR win By Joe Dey ASPEN, co, JULY ~I The Mountain Roadracing Association scorched the pavement at Aspen International Raceway last weekend with racing equal • 50 to America's best. The day's program heated up in 450cc Superblke. Dave Deschennaier (Yam) and Ty Piz (Yam) battled from the stan, each eager to dominate this always-competitive class. Piz crept upon Deschermaier in the curvy outfidel. but Dave's horsepower prevailed on the straights. Riding wheel to wheel, Piz hoped tooutbrake Deschermaier on the back straight. Piz never realized his goal, however, and Deschermaier held on to win by two bikelengths. Piz took second, leaving third to Ken LaCome (Yam). The action in Open Superbike was terrific. Absent from MRA racing for two yean, Danny Walker reappeared on the Suzuki Superbike which captured seventh place at Daytona this year. Walker exploded &om the fourth row of the griel. Bumped off the traek, he squeezed around three rows of riders in the grass. Again on blacktop, Walker dove into turn one in fifth plae.-AkeP-IWG laps', ~bad gained the lead from Aaron Turner. For eight laps Turner stalked Walker, but the challenge ended when Turner crashed his Suzuki in turn three, leaving Walker unchallenged for the win. Mike Pettiford (Kaw) sailed to second place, with Interceptor-mounted Bruce Gibson steaming to third. Formula One was a complete surprise to everybody. TZ250 rider Ratt Sonnleimer pulled the holeshot from the front row and held first place for nine laps while the rest of the field sorted things out. Danny Walker, on the Suzuki Daytona Superbike, looked like a strong second until Philip johnson (TZ250) began to pour on the gas at mid-race. johnson got around Walker and set his sights on Sonnleimer. johnson pursued Sonnleimer for four more laps, and on the last lap pulled a move which drove the crowd insane. johnson drafted and then outbraked Sonnleit ner, diving under him in turn nine, and led to the flag. Walker took third. Results BEG: 1. Edwlrds (Kaw); 2. Aklylm. IK.w); 3. . COLORADO SINGLES GP: 1. Conli (Y.m); 2. CHm.1 (C·A); 3. BI.tday (y.m). 450 MOD·PROD: 1. Moyar (Ylm~ 2. D. Turne, (Suz); 3. R. Cooper, Butlers night champs at Oklahoma City MX By Joe Milie" OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, JULY 30 The fourth annual Oklahoma State Night Championship Series came to a soggy conclusion tonight as unseasonal rainfall over the past two days created a mud race the likes of which are seldom seen in the midwest. After the first set of motos, the participants were polled as to whether or not they wished to continue the muddy melee and they were unanimous in their decision to finish what they had started. Everything went swimmingly ami the'!eCOIHI round produced some of the best competition of the evening. At the concl usion of the festivities, 18 individual champions in 19 classes received overall series rewards, with Stillwater's Guy Cooper emerging as top man in two Pro classes. A rain-reduced field of 250cc Experts went slip sliding away from the line into the first turn, with House of Kawasaki's Tonny Ash getting his first taste of money racing. Clay Hoenshell and Guy Cooper debated briefly as to who would lead and who would follow, with Cooper opting for the point position. After the opening lap the moto was fairly uneventful, the only casualty being Ash. who took his leave after only three laps. Cooper, Hoenshell, and jeff Henke led the parade to the checkers. The second tour was a replay of the first, the only change being that "Pee Wee" Campbell joined the fray in Ash's vacated spot. Campbell acquitted himself in fine fashion, finishing fourth behind the same three riders who dominated the first heal. Hoenshell and Cooper also returned to compete in the 125cc Expert division and this time Hoenshell got the better of lhe match. Cooper led briefly at the start of the second moto but was soon dispatched by Hoenshell, who continued on to the overall win. Steve Bayles finished a wet-andmuddy third behind Cooper. It was Hoenshell making his presence felt for the third time when the Open Experts rolled off lhe line with J.R. Miller leading the way. On the fourth lap, jim Thomas fought his way to the fore. moving Miller to third as HoensheU sliped into second. Second-moto track conditions were considerably improved with some good close action resulting. The Thomas/Hoenshell affair was won by Thomas and he scored lhe overall win. Miller's third-place finish gave him just enough points to make him Oklahoma State Night Series champ. After dominating the Mini Senior class for most of the series, Tommy Newman was overtaken and passed in the last two races by Kenny Butler. Butler's second-place showing tonight was good enough to put him on top of lhe five meeting totals. Deral Hardy took the win tonight with Brett justice third. Newman did mana~e to retain his points lead in the Mintbike I05cc division even though justice, Hardy and Mike Ables occupied the top three positions at the evening's end. Both Butler and Newman, as did all series overall titlists, received beautiful four-foot-high clock trophies to commemorate their well-deserved championships. Hardly anyone was any steadier than the father and son combination of Kenny Butler Sr. and Kenny Butler Jr. As mentioned previously, the younger Butler's steady performances in the Mini Seniors allowed him to finish king of the hill there. Meanwhile, his father was the scourge of the Over ~O Experts, scoring top series finish ahead of Dan Potter and Danny McNutL Results PEEWEEJR: 1._Raynard(Y.m~2.Sh-. Mann (Yarn~ 3. This race Harrison faced an additional obstacle as starter Alan Black caught him jumping the starting lights and sent him to the penalty line. Harrison dido'tlet it bother him and was firsl to the first turn of the first moto. He then went on to win both rounds. Gainesville flash Charlie Galbenski was second with Ted Ingram third. In the 125cc ranks, Steve Hardin got into a battle with Mark Richards, but wound up on top with Richards second and Bobby Mazi third. In the 200cc class, Steve Mai~ took a comefrom-behind win as he took the second moto to emerge on top of a three-way points tie that also involved Mark Meucci and Cris Pinkston. Pinkston and Meucci returned to finish first and third in the Open ranks, sandwiching Eddie Puyear. And, in a very good show, Teresa Puyear topped Theresa Pinkston for the Powder Puff win. Goldade glitters at Austin MX By Joe Milien AUSTIN, TX, JULY 29 Bob "The Bullet" Goldade overcame all probable odds as he scored an upset victory in the Over 30 class. knocking Greg Labbe off the throne hom which he has long ruled as night track king. Goldade got a little help from Steve Corlee in the second moto when the brake s.tay arm on Corlee's Maico came loose, causing his hont binder to lock up. With Corlee disabled, Goldade cruised into the lead Since Labbe had tweaked his knee on the way to a first-heat victory, this left Goldade with the advantage over his two main rivals. Labbe made a heroic effort to continue his pursuit for fame and fortune but persistent pain put him in the pits early and Yamahamounted Goldade was the winner. Ron Dunfee and Russell Chapman mixed it up with their usual verve in the Open Expert class, with Dunfee emerging from the struggle with firstplace money. Chapman opened the show with an unchallenged holeshot in the first mOlO, putting Mike Farmer and Dunfee away in the early laps. He encountered little difficulty, winning the heat going away from the rest of the fidel.
