The second molO was a bike of a different color as Ron Dunfee nailed the lead with a vengeance, leaving bodies and machines scattered in his wake. Chapman was swallowed up in the first-turn turmoil but quickly disassociated himself from the riffraff and set out after the disa ppearing Dunfee. He might have been more fortunate had he not caught him. Attempting LO pass, Chapman's front wheel came in violent contact with Dunfee's rear wheel and he was sent sprawling. Of course Dunfee did not stop to see if he could be of assistance, choosing instead to continue on his way LO win the moLO and first overall. Cool Kevin Horton won the war of attrition in the 250cc Expert clash, placing ahead of Dicky Turnbo and Frank Tello. Turnbo led both motos at the start, but his long layoH has left him somewhat out of shape for the rigors of motocross. Chris Loftin was involved in a first-corner collision that kept him out of the cash for the night. His third place in the second heat was oHset by an initial ninth spot. Ricky Petry accomplished almost the opposite score of Loftin as he came home 3-11 and out of contention. David Beckham seemed to be headed for a certain win in the opening heat of the Open Intermediates but fate stepped in and dealt him a cruel blow with two laps remaining. His Honda 480's handlebar mount came adrift, leaving him with the low-rider blues as Carter Bruce and Bryan Briggs whistled past. A second moLO win was not enough to compensate for the handlebar problem and Beckham had LO settle for the runner-up spot behind Bruce and in front of Briggs. N_ Amerlco·. The track, which was formerly known as the Spearfish Motocross Track, was totally revised and perfectly groomed for the best afternoon of motocross that western South Dakota has seen in a long time. In the Pro ranks, Rick Cycle's Dave Molder had a field day in both the 250cc and Open Pro categories, winning all four motos. In the 250cc Pros, Mike Friend made his return to motocross after suffering a severely broken wrist, and .... h ... I' . tav_ despite riding with a cast, Friend took the early lead ove.r Molder, Curt Hyde and Todd Gikling. Friend rode furiously for two laps before sliding out and allowing Molder LO overtake him for the lead. A lap later, as Friend tried an inside pass back on Molder, the Honda slid out underneath him in the sand, and Friend went down hard on his wrist, putting him out for the malO. Molder then walked away with the maLO, as 125cc Pro winner Gikling took over the runner-up slot but was unable to catch Molder. Cury Hyde finished in third ahead of Lynn Hyde and Friend. Round two saw Friend again grab the holeshot ahead of Molder, Gikling and Hyde Curt, but after the first half of the molO, Friend could not hold off Molder, and Molder took over the lead for good on the fifth lap. Friend trailed in second the remainder of the way, winding up behind Molder, but ahead of Gikling and Curt Hyde. Overall it was Molder, Gikling and Friend. [n the Opens, Molder took over on the open lap of the first moLO ahead of Kelly Olson, also returning to the local scene after a long layoH, with Lynn Hyde and Perry Bicek battling behind. Olson's layoff caused early fatigue as Molder went on to win with a comfortable margin, but Olson did hang on to second, as Lynn Hyde bested Bicek at the wire for third. In round two, Molder took off with the holeshot and led every lap as Hyde and Bicek set ur the chase ahead of Olson. Olson pulled off late in the molO, obviously suffering from the heat, and left Molder to run off with the win ahead of Hyde, who again nipped Bicek in a good battle for the runner-up slot. Jim Bendigo pulled in fourth in the moto. while Dave Hudson rounded out the top five. Results • cove........ complete nationel CIIlenctar of new producu.nd mo....,. in ••ch month', lau•.
