to Sacramento Raceway because he heard about the recently 0<") 00 0') event at the Sidewinders rr dubgrounds, taking a last- 40 comer {l'Iss 10 beat Charlie Barkman, who leo until that point in the main. Due 10 an error in scheduling, &he race was listed as a Regional and many out of staters made the long trek. It was excellent racing n0netheless, as Dan Bennett burned the Junior main event once again and No"ice winner Robert Horban got revenge on Californian RogerTbompson, who won here last week. Horban had been' on a streak lately, and in what was only his sixth Pr0fessional race, he was bacIc. out front in Novice action, putting his AulOmania/Light Raeing Products/ Grants Pass Suzuki into a wicked holeshot to lead Lance Strong and Roger Thompson's Corona Kawasaki. Thompson wasted no time getting around the Honda of Sttong and then set his sights on Horban, who was pulling away at a good rate on his water-cooled RM. Thompson rides the downhill faster than any other Novice, but Horban's choices of lines made him king of the evening. Nothing Thompson could do would take the lead from determined Horban. Thompson made a late attempt to settle things across the line, but got out of shape and watched as Horban took the win. Mike Lawrence too~ a third over Strong, Veri Smith and Terry Wahl. Washington's John Mattocks attacked the start of the Junior main event with his big XR750 Harley, but was to only command briefly, as Bennett wasn't far behind and lOOk over going up the hill then shooting all the way down with Jeff Harsha glued to his rear wheel. Mattocks had a lease on third throughout the entire main event while things got interesting in a battle for fourth benween Chris Fiuhugh, Benji Zacharian and DUane Gerrard. Bennett soon pulled away from Harsha, who rode in a lonely second, then came "Mad Dog" Mattocks, going quite fast on the heavy 750. Bennett took the flag for the win just as he has all year over Harsha, Mattocks, Fiuhugh and Thomas, who made a do-or-die pass across the line for fifth. Mickey Fay, Ron Yamamoto and Kirk Srong led the Expert main event at the end of a lap on the choppy, dusty ttack. Charlie Barkman did his Hurst impression and came from out of nowhere to lead the race on the next lap with Fay and YamamolO fighting for second. YamaJDOlO got a little 100 "slideways" and dropped back, wltich moved Hurst up a nocch inlO third, setting the s~ for the most exciting battle thiS season (except for the regional). Hurst wasn't content with the third position, as Barkman and Fay were ttying everything in the books 10 hold ltim back. Barkman must have felt the heat when Hurst blazed past Fay on the downhill to move IDIO second. Hurst from that point had less than three laps 10 put the ~ on Barkman's 500 Can-Am. Randy Green followed Hurst through ttaffic and settled into fourth place all by himself. Green was a good distance ahead of Frank Word, Thomas McCullough and Jeff Johnson, who made the main for the first time in his last three trips to the northwest. Two thousand screaming fans watched in.awe as Hurst ttied in vain to steal the show and succeeded on. the last lap, when Barkman had the checkered flag in sight. Right across the line came all 75Occ's of Hurst's Triumph for another come-frombehind win, beating a dejected Barkman, Fay, Green and Word to win the "Regional that wasn't!" Wick beats Cruickshank at Huetter" By Clay Ught COEUR D'ALENE, 10, JULY 28 AMA Expert Arney Wick stole the show at Huetter Speedway's three-eights-mile flat track on his Bart Nelson/Advanced Auto/Coeur d'Alene Hondas, beat ing AMA Junior Tony Cruickshank's Taewest Transfer/Red Baron Pizza/ Advanced Auto/Coeur d'Alene Honda in two exciting races, the 500 and Open Expert mains. The wins by Wick ended what has been a total domination by Cruickshank all season at Huetter in big-bore racing. Rusty Yarnamoto took a triple win by posting victories in the 250cc Expert, Open A and 500cc A main events on Yamahas. In the 125cc A tnain. Troy Hedge ran in the back-seat position behind John MitcheU. but Hedge came bacIc. to haunt the 250cc A main event. Hedge put his 125 into the hunt in the early going, wltile Scott Coyne rode his. Yarnaha in the lead until Hedge picked off numerous riders to steal the lead. From there on in it was Hedge pulling away on his watercooled 125 Yamaha 10 win the 250cc main event over rival Mitchell who pulled into second ahead of Mike Boge'sKTM. Rusty Yamamoto ran away with the 250cc Expert main event due to the ttoubles of older brother Ron, who seized and did not finish. Rusty literally blew the remaining nine competitors into the weeds with his fuJl-opm style to beat a freight ttain of AMA Novices to the flag. Cruickshank was testing new tire set-ups on his Honda 500 and didn't have things going as smooth as the Junior sensation usually does. It seems that when Cruickshank would go to grab some throttle, the new set up would want to pitch him off. Wick on the other hand had tltin~ ~ing his way and was long overdue for a win in the Idaho panhandle. Wick led CI"uickshank, Richard Hayman, Darrell Sims and Corky Jurkovich at the start of the main and all the way to the pay window. Wick is rated as one of the better Idaho Experts and tonight he proved it by holding off Cruickshank's late-inthe-race rallies to win. Results OPEN EX: ,. Arney Wid<; 2. Santin smokes Sactofour-strokes By Nuclear Neukllm SACRAMENTO, CA, JULY 29 Ed Santin brought his Santin Specialties/AberglYamaha out initiated four-stroke class at the Friday night stadium motocross races. And, like the week before, he proceeded to smoke both four-stroke motos aboard the same machine that Billy Grossi rode at the four-stroke Nationals at Carlsbad. Brad Bruns topped both 250cc Pro motos on his Suzuki and Hondamounted Mark Sterling won the Open Pro, with Matthew Vulk second overall after two seconds. In 125cc Pro action Rodney Harriger "Yarna-zapped:' Steve "Leapin' Leprechaun" Vlahos on his Wm. Harrison/Roost Factory-sponsored Honda, and "Raw-pie" pilot Frank Sigrist, as they went 1-2-~, respectively, in both motos. Vlahos was bound and determined to beat Harriger in moto two, but an early enOO gave Harriger room to move. In four-snoke action Santin took the first-moto win, but had to thread his way through the pack in the second rnotoafter he sluffed his helmet into the first-tum berm. Santin worked hard for his second moto win as he aced out second overall Larry Hannetton an XR Honda. Bill CJeny rumbled his KLX to third overall ahead of B.P_ Racing's Bruce Porter, gassing his 250 Yamaha 10 fourth. Ross Mullins was fifth overall on his B.P. Racing Yamaha 550. Caron Thompson and Bill Arbogast battled it out in the Powdtt Puff/OT Novice combined class with Can-Am-clad Arbogast winning the first go-round. In molO two, however, Thompson pulled the holesbot and handily defeated a detemuiied Arbogast for the win. Results v-"" \lET NOV: 1. IC8ilh tHant 2. ... SmiIh (Hont 3 . . - G8lID lHon~ INT: 1.
