........k••B;..M.~OidaJaoiia ••T.lIt... II•• N.dco-Coloi.clo••yo.1a9~ 'Tt's always tough when you have a lot of bikes in front of you. You don't want to let the leaders get away but you also have to use some caution," Polen later explained. Davis was not over sympathetic concerning Polen' pligbt. "Yeah, poor Doug, it took him all of 10 ~econds to pull right up on my rear [ender," he of£ered in retort. Polen did have little dif£iculty in working his way forward, and by the start of the second lap had comfortably nestled his 0&0 Enterprises-sponsored Honda Interceptor into the second place slot a few feet behind Davis. On lap three Polen, using the draft perfectly, executed a lingsbot pas on Davis and took the lead. The two toured the track in tandem for the next several circuits before Davis returned the favor. Davis and Polen took the white flag side by side down the front straight and the race was decided a few hundred feet later as they dove off the high bank into tum one. As Davis described it, "Doug just took it. I waited as long as I ever have to shut off and he waited a split second longer. When he went by I just let out a big breatb of air and followed him home." Turkington pocketed casb in the feature race of the day as he guided his GSI I()() Suzuki Katana into the winner's circle in the Formula I contest. George Wallace and Polen made a game effort to stay with the big silver machine but the final result was never in doubt. OtLis Lance put in a fine performance in the combined class, finishing first Novice ahead of a score of Experts. Charles Dodson, filling in for jack Yost, miraculously walked away relatively unscathed after a front wheel wobble sent him into a tumbling exhibition at well over 125 mph. Dodson was of course "shaken," but joked that he had had nylon collarbones installed in the event of just such an occurence. Silver Bullet RacingTeam member Lonnie Doyle, along with Hondamounted Richard Prescott and Suzuki pilot Kevin Horton paced Novice action as they cooly conquered the heat and garnered victories in two separate outings. Other Novice performers putting in good rides during the day were Ski p Epp, Arch ie Loughrey' R.N. Root, Michael Snoddy, Brian Thomas, and jeff Crawford. Much of the attention in the pits was focused on an imported Honda three-cylinder 250. The striking blue and white machine, with Polen at the controls, created a spate of speculative conversation by turning a 2:07:36 lap in the E Superbike Expert session on hard-compound street tires.
