The tailing winds proved to be an asset, as the slick dusty course threw silt into the air in each mota. Chadron,. Nebraska's LeeVerne Berry returned to the winner's circle in the 125cc Pro class, putting his Kawasaki KX one-two-five into the lead in both motas for the victory. Rice Cycles' Dave Molder also kept his tempo in the Opens, running off with another uncontested pair of mota wins. In the25Occaction, Kawasaki's Benny Norfolk and Billy Stork traded moto wins in their battle for the overall. Berry, Todd Gikling and Ladd Poitra went into the first l25cc Pro malO side-by-side with Berry grabbing the early lead followed by Poitra and Gikling. Finally. with only a few laps remaining and Berry way out front, Gikling slid inside Poitra on a dropoff hairpin, and came up the other side in second. From there Gikling held the runner-up slot ahead of Poitra, while Berry came across with the mow win. Round two saw Berry again take the early lead with Gikling, Wade Rice, Poitra and jerry Wagner in tow. Berry spent the entire moto out front, as Giklingcould not muster up enough steam to challenge the leader. Berry went on to the wire uncontested. as Gikling setded for second both in the moto and overall. In spots three through five remained Rice. Poitra and Wagner. Results 125 PRo: 1. Doug Polen. Ronnie Lunsford and Britt Turkin~oneach managed to take home first-place money in two Expert classes while Ottis Lance was top Novice rider with wins in three divisions_ For afternoon racing the temperature had risen into the high 90s. with the humidity reading not far behind. Quite a bit of additional heat was generated by the 145 mph duel staged by Doug Polen and Vernon Davis in the B Superbike Expert class. Davis, aboard the higWy modified XV920 Virago for Kasson Yamaha Racing Team of Austin, used his front row grid position to good advantage as he was well into the lead by the first turn when the green flag went up. Polen, on the other hand, was gridded on the last row but wasted no time in making his way to the front.
