The writers of the editorial were miles off basa on their facts, lumped the "motorcycle element" in with the "pot-smoking youths" James Watt felt would attend the Beach Boys concerts. One of Pape's cohorts fired off a letter to Channel 9, protesting the misrepresentation of the facta and the derogatory a1atements. However, in Channel9's reply, they missed both points, and 10 obviously they haven't gotten the idea. Maybe a letter explaining to the station management that if they don't have the time or the energy to watch their facts, that motorcyclists haven't got the time or energy to watch their programs would be in order. Channel 9's address is 6516 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90030. Verbatim, the editorial 'was as follows: "Many travel experts consider Califomia's high de..rt to be one of the world's natural beauties. It is a place where plant life and animals survive harmoniously as nature intended. This November the delicete balance of this primitive reserve will be disturbed by 1400 vehicles. The Oepertment of Interior and Bureau of und Management has authorized a 1 59 mile Barstow to us Vegas motorcycle race over open terrain. In the rece the motorcycles will leave a wake of destruction of thousands of plants and animals native to our precious desert. The Interior Oepertment is also allowing three pit stops for gasoline, oil and repeir ..rvice. Pit crews along with spectators Will only further endanger this wilderness environment. Secretary of the Interior James Watt refused to let the Beach Boya aing at the Fourth of July concert in Washington. He felt that they would invite pot smoking youths to the nation's capitol. But in California he is allowing the motorcycle element tou.. ourdesertforfree.ltisaAd commentary to think thet it took nature aeons to create our pristine desert only to have 1400 motor· cycles ruin it in one day."
