" The Washington State Department of Transportation, complying with a provision of the federal nickel-agallon gas tax law enacted earlier this year, has given its OK to the use of motorcycles on carpool and highoccupancy vehicle lanes, the AMA reports. Meanwhile, using the legislative process to accomplish basically the same goal, Hawaii has enacted a law giving motorcyclists access to that state's carpool lanes. Washington's DOT is the first to open its limited-access lanes as a result of the congressional action. In addition to Washington and Hawaii, HOV lanes can be found on fed~rally funded highways in California, Florida, Massachu~lts,Virginia and Oregon.
