Fabrication Larry Theo~ld's bac~-pedal~g letter last week IS pretty mteresung when he SWlS talking about fabrica· tions. I spoke 10' him at ~iIIow Springs immediately after jern Woo had come 10 my pits, eyes red [rom crying, and reponed that Theobald had said to her. regarding lhe jon Woo Memorial Safely Project, "I don't want to have anything to do with that bull-·--." Theobald admitted on the spot lhat he said iliat and admitted that his judgemenl in saying that to jon's widow was less than good. He even said he was sorry about the whole thing, allhough he never said that 10 jerri. Now he's Irying to make it sound like it never happened. His slOry has changed, and it isn't right. JOHN D. ULRICH Onwio, CA Mistaken identity We wanled 10 lhank Cycle News and Larry Langley for mentioning the fork "disc" prOlectors in lhe june 22. I ~ lest of lhe 495 MXC KTM. There was one mislake, though. The fork protectors are produced by Z Racing ProduclS, which has a [ull line of performance products for KTMs. Pro-Cycle KTM is lhe exelusive distributor for Z Racing Products and interested parties can conlact lhem at 1265 Lincoln. Anaheim, CA92805. JOE ZOLLER OwnerlManager. Z Racing Products Anaheim.CA Snubbed by Honda I would like to commenl on Honda's recent withdraw I of Freddie Spencer from lhe july 16-17 Laguna Seca road race. If Honda had suspected that they might be withdrawmg Freddie [rom competition, why was Cycle News, among olhers. allowed to advenise that Spencer's homecoming, along with Kenny Roberts, Eddie Lawson and Randy Mamola (all of- the later three are still attending) will be at this year's Laguna Seca? Honda cannot convince me that they wanl the 500 title any worse than Yamaha. If top riders continue to foL- low Honda's example, you can bet that Laguna Seca will suffer due to lack of spectator attendance. I for one, have put a lot of planning inlo attending lhis race, and I seriously doubt that I will make lhe similar effort in the future 10 attend this race. I would like to extend a special thanks for nothing 10 Honda for snubbing lhousands of Americans on the west coast out of a chance to see one of America's premier road racers. as well as what could have been a [anlastic battle between four o[ lhe top riders in lhe world. BOB THOMPSON Long Beach. CA Sequoia: Do you care? We just returned from spending lhe Fourth of july weekend riding in Sequoia. Only about one-tenlh of the Irails were open due 10 the wet and muddy conditions. The weather was sunny and warm as ~S volunteers worked to complete the one-mile section of lhe Bitter Creek trail [rom Mahogany Road to Fish Creek. We can now ride trail from Troy Meadows to Fish Creek Camp. Eventually. the Forest Service plans for this trail togoalllheway 10 Kennedy Meadows. At the end of the work session, which lasted about two hours, Mark Anderson of the MOlorcycle Industry Council gave a short lalk about lhe threat of elosure that this area faces from several Wilderness Expansion bills now being heard in lhe U.S. Senate. In these bills, our areas are known as South Sierra, Monache and Dome· land addition. If you care about lhe future of riding in this area, please contact your U.S. Senators bolh by phone and mail. Telllhem you want to continue to use these areas and that you don't wanl them included in lhe wilderness. Write Senator Alan Cranston, 5757 Century Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, or call 21~/642-5086, or Senator Pete Wilson. 11000 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, or call 21~/209-754~. Also. write both at their Washington of£ices: SenalOr Hart Senate Office Building, Washington. D.C., 205,1$1, •• _• I was eXlremely concerned by the letter from Brian Beyette recently published in your paper. He had decided that to protest the "ripooff" of Green Stickie Funds, he would not renew his green stickie for the not two years. I was lhankEul iliat you poinled out we misunderstood Green Stick.ie Fund origins. To furlher explain lhe program, I will go into a short history of the fund. In 1972 a group of enlightellCld legislalOrs were made aware that mil· lions o[ off·roaders were filling gas cans and Iransporting off-road vehicles to lhe desert and mountain areas to consume lhe [uel. These people were paying a road laX but weren't using the roads I They came up wilh a complex formula to pay back the off-roaders [or the non-use of public roads. The Green Stickie was born 10 keep Irack o[ how much gas tax was returned to the OHV people. The Sl5 for two years is only about 5·]0% o[ the Green Stickie Fund! If we don't continue to keep our regislration current severallhings will happen, none o[ lhem good: I. The CHP can stop you [or trail· ering non·registered vehicles and issue tickelS. 2. You will be refused enlrance into State Vehicle parks. ~. Cuts in allocated funding will SlOp future development solely for off-road use such as lhe trails system, a plan [or a slatewide network of trails criss-crossing California, lhat will be funded by OHVmoney. A protest should be mounted by your Assemblyman whose job it is to represent you. Things are really getting better for off-roaders. Senate Bill 156 has passed the Senate and is being considered by the Assembly Ways and Means Committee, and if passed we will get back $21 million into the fund. The money can only be spent with approval by the newly formed OHV Commission, which is chaired by jim Livermore, an off-roader who is CORVA's San Bernardino County Coordinator. rm lhe vite-chairman, and I own seven off-road-registered vehicles and drive a jeep. In ilS short life the commission has already opened more riding areas for enjoyment, doubled lhe campsiles at Pismo. funded an Off·Road Fair at Hungry Valley. and laken over operation of many National Forest Trails. A[ter seeing all lhe expired regis· tration on bikes and three-wheelers at Pismo Beach over the Fourlh of July weekend, I could see lhe writing on the wall. I can understand the coocern lhat the money lhey contribute willbe "ripped off" as in the past. but when you consider the $15 is only 5-S'{, of lhe tOlal fund you can see that if we hold back our renewal fee, the Slate will hold back the gas laX so who loses? We dol For every $15 we kick in the Slate antes up about $140, so have [ailh and don't give up; lhe pendulum is definitely swinging our way. We have more and more areas opened up, we got the Barstow to Vegas race back, and best of all, we have people in Sacramtnto who undersland our needs and concerned publications to keep us informed.
