Veteran professional Mark Ra kestraw got as close to Abernat hy as he would all day on the line prior to the first moto, bef o re the two roared down the lengthy straigh taway side by side when the gate fell. At the end of th e first lap Abernathy held a four-second lead and, upon com p leti on o f two circuits, he was 10 seconds in fron t. While Aberna th y was cruising effortless ly, Ronald Daw son and Mor ris T rox ell were mak in g th e going difficu lt for Rakestraw. On th e si xth lap, Rakestraw managed to ex trica te himself fro m th e mob a nd Gl en n Boyett moved in to harass Da wson a nd Troxell. As the fir st heat dre w to a clos e, Abernathy slowed his pace consi dera bly, and the hard cha rgi ng Rakestraw tried desperat ely to close th e ga p.
