Abernathy calmly removed his goggles and loosened his helmet strap. seemingly unmindful of the physical exertion required in the 90-degree heat. Dennis Hawthorne. on a recently refurbished Husqvarna, won the first heat of the 250cc Expert class ' with little apparent difficulty as he pulled out a sizeable lead on the first lap arid then rode steadily to the checkered flag. European Cycle Center of Temp le rider Tommy Pavelka kept H awthorne honest for the first four laps and then stalled in the tight flagturn. lett ing Rakestra w, David Wil son, Hunter Carothers, and Roger Schellenberger by. Schellenberger made the best of a Rakestra w bobble a nd went around him a la p la ter. On the last loop Ra kestra w caught a nd repassed Schellenberger th ro ugh the mountainous double-jump section and went on to fin ish a distant second to Hawthorne with Schellenberger right behind. H aw th orn e gated poorly in the second mota and found himself fifth at the end of the initial circuit. After getting by a determined Shawn Sewell and then bumping past P a velka . Hawthorne set about the task of catching Schellenberger. who was grimly attempting to thwart the lead -grabbing efforts of Rakestraw. Hawthorne followed the battling twosome for several laps and then went by both in short-order with three laps remaining. He heaved the Husky off the extreme right lip of the front-stretch jump and then dove inside Ra kestraw in the ensuing turn. In the next turn Hawthorne eased to the outside of a faltering Schellenberger for the lead as Rakestraw also passed. "I knew I'd have to go like hell in those last laps' cause Mark is in real good shape and he always finishes strong," a heavy breathing Hawthorne explained after the race. The final surge was good enough to hold off Rakestraw who captured his second overall-money finish of the day . Sche llenberger finished a fatigued third. Tv Carter returned to Novice competition after his horrendous crash at Conroe six weeks ago, and the layoff apparently did little to slow him as he won rnoros in both the 250cc and Open classes. A fouled plug kept him from a trophy in the Open clash. and Kyle Powell won the second and deciding heat in the 250s to put Carter in second place there. Dearl Croft, making big thumping noises aboard a new TT 600, crashed while leading the first rnoto of the Open class and eventually finished third overall behind Tim Barton and Oklahoman Danny Horschler. Wieder dominates Pine Ridge Enduro By Mark Pensky C RA WF O RD. NE. MAY 8 Drigan Wie der showed all of the 450 Rock y Mountain En duro circuit riders at the 15th an nual P in e Ridge En duro why he gets a free ride. The KTM-supported, Hi- Point and Jones Gogglessponsored, 250cc rider dropped only six points on the way to overalling the muddy event. Kevin Davis rolled in second overall on his new Husky 4110WR. dropping 10. His comments at the finish when informed about his ex-teammates lower score: "How does he do it! He kicked mv rear. . Well. it was fun anyway." Which says it all. The event was fun. Starting out on a 24-mph section with threats of deep water crossings and plenty of mud holes. the riders seemed to be ina hurry to lea ve the starting line. Traction on the loamy green terrain ranged from 100% to 99% - it was good. The mud holes were there but not impassable. Only a few of the hot shoes had trouble. O ne fellow who dropped eight points in the first one, but rallied back to tie for the 250A class win was ISD E hopeful John Blythe. When asked about his delay he said, " I' ve been trying to perfect the eeny-meeny-miny-mo theory of picking a line through a mud hole. I ended up with only the seat of my WR showing and had to help two other guys out so they would help me ." Husky Support rider Mark Hynes rode a smart. consistent race to take the 250A with 18. Six-day rider MorreI .Griffith had the class in the bag until he submerged his brand-new Yamaha 250 IT not more than six easy miles from the finish . He kept saying. " I don't believe this happened to me. It took some serious plumbing work to get it running again." Kevin Davis, the flamboyant Aspen ski instructor. two -time six day rider and last year's RMEC champion, carved some fine lines with his sponsored Husky to take Open A. Not far behind was a hard-charging John Bruckb a uer with a Ill-point loss for second. Steve Matthiesen revved his 200 Kawasaki to the top of the 200cc class with 15. For the B riders it was also an excel lent run. In the morning they practiced timekeeping and in the after1I00n they learned why they're not A riders yet. But they loved it. Particularly Rick Robeson and Tim Wil banks. They turned in very good scores of 25 each - the nod going to Robeson for the B overall. • I" Q r 'I ' t :r 59 t, •
