GSIIOO-mounted Bryce Logan shot into the lead with Westb y in pursuit, Westby closed th e gap o n Logan and was on his tail pipe by lap seven when Westby took adva ntage of a la pped rider to stea l the lead. By the checkers at lap 10, he had six seconds on Logan. C Superbi ke provided lo ts of action as GPz550 riders Dan Cartwright and Ken Lawson swapped the lead back and forth, with Curtis Robinson and Suzuki-mounted Keith Brewer fighting over third. New for 1983 is th e 24-lap Team Relay. Riders ch ange every six laps, providing lots of action and excitement in th e pit s as well as the track. At th e Le Mans-type start, GPz750 mounted Bryce Cadion pushed into the lead with Kawasaki 100D-mou n ted Kar l Shultz right behind him. Suzuki 550£S rider Keith Brewer dropped it at the start but rapidl y closed on the field. On lap six the action picked up in the pits as riders chan ged. Lastp lace Brewer blasted in and his teammate Ali Allen passed three teams leaving pit row. At lap II , third place rider Toberman pulled in early, allowing Allen to close the gap. When Toberrnan exited the pits, Allen was o n his tail for the remaining lap. With the next rider change the Suzuki/Honda bat tle contin ued as Brewer an d Canti took up the race where Alle n and To berman left off. With the last change at lap 18, Allen was on Taberman like a shadow, pressing and passing several times a lap through the infield, on ly lo lose it back on the straights.
