Faria and McNeill "too good" at Ventura By Bill locey VENTU RA, CA, MAY 17 O n a t-shirt ni gh t fill ed with no table night moves, " Fl yin" Mi ke Faria won h is seco nd straig h t Scratch m ain at th e Ventura Racewa y. And new (to us) Aus tralian rid er J ohn McN eill won the Handicap main in on ly hi s second week of SoCaI racing. McNeill , wh o raced in England the past two seaso ns for Cradley Heath a nd Weymouth, cou ld n' t agree on an '83 contract , so he decided to try speedway southern Cal ifornia style. So fa r, he likes it. A lot. It was a night of fast racing on a smooth tra ck that sa w more passing than a Dukes of Hazard TV program. How fast? Well, Fari a, who has turned a lap here faster than any Friday - night car driver , could make up no ground whatever on Greg Ayers, And y No rthrup and Buddy Ro binso n in his semi. Now, that 's fast. In the Handicap main, McNeill repeated h is ea rlier performances, winning easi ly with little pressure. The Bud Man pa ssed four rid ers and was second. In one of th e few crashes of the nigh t, Northrup took a turn for th e worse in turn four, and Ayers slam med in to th e fallen rid er . but bo th managed to exi t unassisted . In Scratch racing , things worked out th e way th ey were supposed to as all the hot gu ys mad e th e main. En ro ute, Faria a nd Sam Ermolenko put on a memorable four-lap, wheel-towheel war wi th coun tless lead cha nges that remained in doubt until Ermalenk o put a last-turn move o n Flyin ' Mike. McNeill, th e onl v rid er to mak e both mains, took a nea rly lead in the Scratch main, but went wide on turn two, forcing Steve Lucero wid er still and forcing Ermolenko 10 lay it down and end up upside down between a ha y bal e and th e wall. Ermolenko, injured only in th e wallet , was excl uded from th e restart. The en core found McNeill too wide in two again; thi s tim e Faria and Lucero bla sted by on the inside a nd the race was on. Lucero led for two lap s until his roommate passed him on the outside and that was that. NOCONTEST Are you lookingfor afast way to the top?
