On turn four of the fourth lap, Brant got past Anderso n on th e outside. On turn two in the fifth lap, Anderson regained the lead and held it for th e win by half a wheellength. Brant came back to win the Junior main , as Anderson flipped end over end a nd en ded hi s race in turn two on th e th ird lap. Bobby Hedden was second, and Coors Wright third. Faria, Lucero guest stars at Napa By Jann Houston NAPA, CA, MAY 21 A night of speedway becomes something really special when Mike Faria and Steve Lucero come home for a night in north- 42 , ern Ca lifornia. That's the kind of a night it was Saturday in Napa. It wouldn 't be an exaggeration to say that man y of th e fans in this small win e-country communit y had never befor e seen the kind of riding th at they were treated to tonight. To su m it up sim p ly. Mike Far ia wo n every event he participat ed in, with th e excep tio n o f th e Handi ca p mai n, wh ich Lu cero won. The Scratch mai n wa s a thriller as Faria took the lead from th e th ird f.0si tio n, with yo u ng Andy <;;ilbert- so n co m ing off the outsid e in seco n d . Gilbertson was smooth and almost perfect as he managed to giv e Faria so me real competition as well as hold a good lead on Paul Orlandi and Denn is Robinson. In th e Handicap m ain , Dennis Davi s, winner of the Handicap main in Auburn the previous night, h eld th e lead for the first three laps. In turn fo ur on the fourth lap, Lucero took Davi s on th e inside, as Faria took him on the outside, and Davis was suddenly settling for th ird, as Lucero moved into the lead a nd held it to th e checkered flag. Faria was second and Davis third. Later. it was more of th at terrific Division T wo acti on, as Ri ck Stephen s and Charlie Haines battled it out for th e lead in a back-and-forth switch -o ff that changed faster th an yo u co u ld write it down . It was H aines who took th e win, do ing a Division One style wh eelie as he crossed th e line, which almost took out th e fen ce and undoubtedl y scar ed him half to death! In th e T h ird Division main , it was l 6-year-old Brett Flor y o f Ren o taking home his seco nd Division Three troph y of th e seaso n . Brett shou ld soo n be in Division T wo . In the Junior Division. Darrell Anderson a nd Sco tt Bra nt showed the fans that thrills and excitement can come in small packages. In th e first Scan Ormiston smoked lo a vicwry in Denver as he captured th e First Divi sion Scratch main with so me smooth racing an d a few slick moves. Orm iston sta rte d off th e n ight 's racing by taki ng a seco nd behi nd Rich Reichardt in his firs t Ha nd icap heat. H e then battled to a first in the 10th heat over Mike J a udon , Allen Roh r and Ken n y P iep er. In the H andicap semi he was forced to settle for a seco nd place when he was unable to pass J ack P ieper. Bo u nci n g right back , h e then raced ou t front to ta ke th e Scratch sem i a head of Rick Steele, Mike Jaudon a nd Steve Ro binso n . The Scratch main wasn 't an easy race. Wh en the gate went up O rmisto n was pi tted agai ns t so me of th e state's best, incl ud ing yo u ng Lance Darso w wh o has been a th orn in a ll th e rid ers' si des . Wh en it was a ll o ver, Ormiston go t th e tro phy a nd the kiss from th e troph y gir l. Kenny Pi eper took th e Handicap main with hIS typical gr eat riding. Kenny bea t brother Dave a n d brother J ack in hi s quest for th e ch eckered flag. Ri ck Steele pressured Pi eper, but couldn't make the p ass . Ormiston finished third with Dave Pi eper finishing in fourth . The Second Divi sion was tak en by Pete Madden in his effort to get into the First Division. Pete outraced Dennis Hartley and Scott Crooks along with Dave McMillen who did not finish because of bike trouble. In th e one- o n -one " King of th e Hill" match race competition, Lance Darsow, who has held th e crown for two weeks now , took th e honors from Rick Steele. Dennis Robinso n, determined to have a better night of racing than on opening night, drew the n um ber two position in the Scratch main and Jumped into ' the lead as the gate went up, never ir! losing it. David Faria, who won the Scratch main last week at both Au burn and Napa, did his best to make it three in a row . Robinso n managed a three bikelength lead , as Faria and Pau l Orlandi went tire to tire in a battle for seco nd . ~ O n turn two in the fourth lap, Faria went down , ending his night at the I u8 races . Orlandi moved into second .,v and Mar c Prince was third as Robin- 3 E son grabbed the checkered flag for his rrr victory lap. The question is, how ';;w many more rac es can Robinson 's ex- . pectant wife Pam handle without giving birth to th eir first " li tt le Ro binso n " a t th e track.
