Result s M aloney t ops Lackey at Carlsbad By Kenneth Stein CARLSBAD, CA, MAY 22 Three surprises awaited the 250cc Pro crowd at Carlsbad Sunday; first, Brad Lackey showed up, second, he was on a YZ250, a nd third, h e didn ' t win. Bryan Mal oney redefined th e word fast, beating La ckey in both rnot os. As expected , Bad Brad hol esh ot the fir st mot o a nd quickl y pulled a way from the p ack . Mal oney, who sta rte d poorl y, began th e chase ba ck in seventh pla ce. As Lackey stretched hi s lead over seco nd-p laced Woody Carlso n (Ya m), Maloney began climbing through th e ranks. Aft er onl y two and a h alf laps, Maloney caught a fading Scou Sla yton (Ya m ) for third and pressured Carlson for a lap until grabbing second on the fourth . Lackey's pace let up some, and Maloney slowly closed the gap between them. The two were coronary-close by halfway through th e l6 -lap race, almost a minute ahead of the next rider. Maloney squeezed by on the ninth lap and held Lackey o£f all the wa y home. Maloney, understandably stoked, never gave anyone a chance to ruin h is day in the second moto, He had the lead at the drop of th e gate, and ran away with it. David Hopwood (H on ) £ollowed in second until £ading, still plagued by brake problem s. Carl son passed Hopwood i n th e second lap, while La ckey co u ld fin ish no hi gher th an fifth. The purpose of Lackey's visit was " testin g," although he conceded th at practice for June's USG P was a possi b le fa ctor als o . Accordin g to La ckey, th e YZ " needs work ," a sta tem ent borne out by the fact that mortals were a ble to beat him. Results 44 80 EX: 1. Ramon Dominguez (Kaw) . 80 INT: 1.
