Johnson r~~ w~1l in hi.sfirst q~al ifi er h ere , finishing thud behind " Ka m i kaze" Ken Maeda 's GPz-550. Johnson 's travelling companion Kirk Graves charged his 1983 Seca even harder, winning the 600cc Production heat ahead of David Hughes. Kirk Graves holeshot and ran away in the 600cc Production main heat. In the first lap a lone he led the 450/600cc combined pack by more th an 500 feet. Halfway through the IO-Iapper, David Hughes and Mike Johnson, both aboard Visions, held second and third respectively. Hughes began to reel in Graves and was a lmost abreast of him as they dove into downhill turn three on the final lap. Then things got interesting. " H e's super in traffic - really clean. But he hit the Vision's weak spot, passing me ," Graves said later. Hughes had gone inside t?ward t~e sharp right hand esse , pitched h~s Vision hard over and ground the 011 filter. He lost it, and Graves (o n the outside) motored right onto him. About eig h t more bikes, mostly 4505, went down in a big pile. Graves pulled his Seca off of Hughes an.d parked it. Hughes remounted h is Yamaha, unaware of his broken oil filter, and seized in turn seven . Two seconds behind this fracas, Mike Johnson saw enough to avoid the tangle and went on to win the race.
