Anderson masters two classes at Portland MX By Brian Barnes PORTLAND , OR, AP R. 7 A record first-n ight crowd of bo th ri de rs a nd spectators helped Portla nd Interna tio nal Raceway open its doors tonight for this year's 26-race campaign. J im And er son (Ya m a h a Suppon/MX Fox/ ATK/Kal-Gard) came out the big winner of the night, taking both th e 125 and 250cc Pro titles. The fir st moto o f th e 125cc Pro class saw Anderson get th e holeshot a nd not look back, taking th e win over Doug Lange (Yam h ill Yamaha / Yam aha Support/MX Fox /Bel-Ray), J im Anderson (H ood River Honda ), Rick Bozarth (KT M West/Iron Horse) a nd self-sup port ed Yamaha rider J on Buyas. Beaverton Kawasaki 's Gra yson Hart led ih e second moto over Lange, Bozarth a nd Anderson for the first four .la ps, but by lap five, Anderson had assu med his famil iar spot up front and was go ne Ior the win. Lange was again second. Bozarth third, Hart fou rt h and Buyas fifth . T he 250cc class fou nd Ron Sun (Maico/ Ch uck Sun Apparel)and Dave Hettinga (Newberg Honda /Honda Support/O'Neal ) chasing Anderson for the second and third spots in both motos. Denn y Kishpaugh a n d Jason McCormick put on two very good rac es in th e Pee Wee clas s. McCormi ck , riding the Junior class, has really been tearing up the track as of lat e and proved he can go fast by holding off Expert-ranked Kishpaugh. During the second moto Kish paugh managed to pa ss McCormick at th e halfway mark, after some great racing, for the win. McCormick stuck right with Kish pa ugh for a close second. Results PP: 1. Hopkins powers to Peck Hill win By Linda Haag PECK, ID , APR. 4 It was a great day for the 1000 spectators at the annual Peck Hill climb held by the Orofino Motorcycle Club as they witnessed three Super Mod ified bikes cl im b th e hill. Ron Edi e was the first over th e top during the first go-rou nd with a time o f 16.5-seconds on a n alcoho l-fue led 900cc H onda, but ended up second to Yamaha 490-mo unled Ron Ho p kins who posted a q uicker 14.9-second run on his second a ttem p t. Also over th e top in th e Super Modified class was Lee Olson on a 460 Yamaha. There was al so good acti on in the Stock classes with a run of 265 feet. eight inches in th e Open cla ss by Mark Deyo for fir st pl ace a n d Doug Mattson with 254 feet Ior second place. CA, AP R. 3 It was a bea utifu l Easter Su n - day at Sa nd Hill Ra nch and the racers came o ut to enjoy the first dry track of the season. An Easter egg hunt provided a diversion for the younger spectators and little Wes Anderson won the trophy for finding the most eggs. Mike Pascarella ran another consisten t race to win the Minis, but the hero was little Don Pea n tn icde who took his Contra Costa Honda from a last place start to the winners circle! The big bikes pulled up to the line next and Wa yne Archer of Berkeley Yamaha grabbed the Open Pro holesh o t just a he a d o f Kell y Barry's Honda. Larry Dashiel quickly pulled into second a nd by lap four Doug McRae began 10 put th e pressure on Dashiel. Joey Sch lag moved to fourth after a terrible start a nd McRae passed Da shiel on the downhill. Sch lag soon moved to third as McRae overtook Barry. Ba rry began 10 show signs of fatigue as Schlag zipped by and set hi s sig h ts on McRae. The checker of moto one saw McRae take it by less than a foot . Randy Collins holeshot moto two with Barry , McRae and Sch lag in stant ly on his rear fender. Co lli ns topped "Godzilla Hi ll" with a whopping loop-out that dropped him to th e back. Sch lag put his downhill pass on Ba rry and ran away with rnoto two a nd secured the overall WIn . Doug McRae took both wins in the 250cc Pros. The American Federation of Mo torcyclists North m et tod a y a t Sears Point In ternational Racewa y for th e seco nd race of the no rt hern season. Several new potholes in the track, col d temperatures and wind that gusting to 30 mph combi ned to slow lap times. The most exci ting matches occu rred in the Formula S (T humpers) race . There were no favorites in this race .-the two people that dominated the class last year . Chuck McAvoy and Kurt Bickel, were not racing. MeAvoy was out of competition due to injuries, and Bickel was still bui lding his bike. _ At the start Mike Kane took the lead on his Santa Rosa Motorsportl Slater Bros. Suzuki. He was followed by Allen Yarrow on hisself-sponsored Yamaha and Kane's little brother Steve on a Can-Am. As they climbed the hill it was ap parent that the elder Kane was working with a few more horses than the o ther two riders, but Yarrow was not going to let that get in his way . He started reeling in Kane in all of the tight turns. He was able to make a pa ss in the entrance to the Carousel , but Kan e repa ssed him on the uphill stra igh t to tum seven. Kane had the edge on braking a nd h orsepo wer , Yarrow rode harder in the.' tu rn s. Yarrow knew he had to be in th e lead when they went into to turn II , if he wanted to take the win from Kane. He made his pass in turn 10, a high spe ed right hander. The two bikes bumped and Yarrow went carreening off the track at 100 mph. " I felt awful wh en All en ran into the mud and th e weeds ," Kane said later. " I looked back to see if he was all right, but he just go t it back on th e track without even sh u tting off ." Yarrow 's effort s would not get him the win. H e had lost too much time during hi s o ff-roa d excurs ion. The race en ded with Kane in first a nd Yarrow a muddy seco nd. Steve Kan e, wh ile unabl e to stay wi th th e top two , sett led into a com forta ble pace a nd Iinish ed h is first-ever road race in third. In th e O pen Super Street race both the O pen a nd 750cc classes were a lso co m bi ned in a two-w ave sta rt. In the O pen class Denny Dohert y wa s the clear favorite to ta ke hi s 14th co nsecutive win . but in th e 750 cla ss a tight battle was expected. WIth th e new AMA rules. th is clas s has become a provin g ground Ior the Superbike effo rts of privateers. Bernd Koegler , AFM 's holeshot expert . took th e lead at the £lag. He wa s followed by Doug Filangeri e on . a Kawas aki sponso red by Rich mo nd Kaw asaki a nd Kerr y Bryant on his Supertrapp Kawa saki . Allen Yarrow o n a Yamaha 500 single and Ken Evan on a box stoc k Suzuki GS750 held fourth and fifth respectively. Filangerie went down on the second lap wh en hi s rear tire broke loose in turn three. Bryant inherited second pl a ce a n d sta rted ca tch ing up to Koegl er. Meanwhile, th e battle for third contin ued between Yarrow on hi s 500 single a nd Evan on the fourcylinder GS750 . Yarrow had a ground clearance a nd braking advantage, while Evan had the horsepower. By th e the time Koeg ler caught the back of the Open class, he was having' trouble with a sticking throttle. and Bryant was on Koegler's rear tire. Bryant pa ssed Koeg ler in traffic and started stretching out his lead. Bu t when the whi te flag came out, Bryant pulled into the pi ts. H e explained lat er, " My ridi ng for Supertrapp is the n ext best th in g to a Iactory ride. It 's not fai r for me to co me out here with my big budget an d take trophies a nd poi nts away fro m cl ub racers." Bryan t's pitting gave Koegler the win and Yarrow, who now fou nd h im self in seco nd, had a safe lead on Evan in third.
