seco nd rnoto, followed by Fisher and Du bach. Fisher's rear tire went flat. and Du bach caught Hayes on tHe third lap. Things looked cozy for Dubach until the fifth lap. when he . realized he was losing his clutch. He had to paddle his way up the steep" hill , and slipped his clutch on the downhill in a desparate effort to expand what was left of his plates by heat build-up. With less than one lap to go, Dubach discovered six neutrals. Denning shot ahead of Fisher's crippled bike for thewin. Dubach's . heartfelt monosylIabic summarizatioitT was equally justifiable and un-,s printable. ~OOl Results . 2m ...... ..... lo-< 0. < "b 125 PRO: 1. Mark Oenning (Yam); 2. CMC Carlsbad MX to Maloney By Kenneth Stein CARLSBAD, CA, MAR . 27 Three weeks prior to today's race at Carlsbad, 250cc P ro rider Bryan Maloney (Han) underwent surgery for the removal of 46 his tonsils. The com pe tition never recovered. The opera tion solved a breathing difficulty that has hampered Maloney's riding for much of the early season. After leading the first two laps, Maloney was passed by Don Turk (Hon ), and Scott Sargent (Suz) got by on the third. Instead of fading, out of breath as before, Maloney put pressure on the leaders. He caught Sargent and began wh ittling away on Turk's sizeable lead. By the middle laps the two Hondas were inseparable, but Maloney finall y pulled ahead. Trying to sta y close, Turk missed the line and bounced off the fence, losing his momentum. Maloney won by a large margin. with Vince Pablan o (H on) finishing third. A more determined Turk pulled the holeshot in the second moto and it lasted three laps. He passed Turk in mid-air over th e jump after tum one and, within two laps, placed nine seconds worth of Carlsbad carpet between them. Turk held a so lid second unti l the II th lap, when. hampered by a blowout, h e was over taken first by Woody Carlson (Yam ) an d then Pablano. In the 12Scc Pro cla ss, Doug Dubach (Suz) starte d th e first moto in fourth. Dubach first caugh t Mark Denn in g (Yam) , th en Roger Ha yes (Suz), a n d he finall y took and held the lead from Mik e Fish er (Ya m) . H ayes took the holeshot in th e Minis By Rod Eschenburg SAN DIEGO. CA, MAR . 20 The Minicycle wins came in pairs today at Baro na Oaks and for new faces as Charl ie Samp~ son ' (Kaw) had a four for four n sweep of the Stock and Modified Intermediates, and Anthony Gorin (Suz ) did likewise in Novice 12- 16. Gorin had an easy time of it in the Modifieds as h e went two for two over favored Steve Furuya a nd then h ad to really scramble to down Bryan Powell in a come from behind second rnoto win with Furuya in a very tight third ~ in his second class . Sa mpso n had a little more fun as he scored a three way tie-breaker win in th e IO O p en Minis over Furuya Scc and Michael Dickerson. For both Sampson and Gorin it was their fir st wins in their respective classes, and . next race day they will go against each other as Gorin 's wins moved the . steady riding 12-year-old into the Intermediates. Speaki ng of classification ad.. vances, two strong wins in the Mini Beginners earned Yamaha-mounted Greg Rosa a move to the Novices. The 12Scc classes can never be accused of being anemic at Baron a , and nothing changed today as the Stock Experts saw Mitch Pal mer (Oceanside Hon ) take a 1-2 finish squeaker Stock win over new Honda rider Mark Scott, and Mike Fisher switching to the Yamaha bra n d and going two for two in the Modifieds. The big battle was for second between Pa lm er and Scott. The Intermediates saw Anthony De Ben edett i (Yam) score his Iirs t , Intermediate win over John Yonekura (Suz). Suzuki rider Jimmy Palmer really took off in the Stocks as he just flat ran away from a good field. Yamaha rider Lance Rieman has been riding at Barona for a while with little or n o recognition, but no more, as th e qui et , sm oo th rider got it all together Sunday an d parlayed two firsts, a seco nd an d a thi rd for a sweep
