Denis was followed by fellow ex-Min i Expert Danny Storbeck. Perhaps th e best rivalry of th e da y was seen in the Old Timer Junior class as both Ri chard Bealer and Howard Davi s were battling for th e championship. They were within one point of each other and the win was crucial. Davis took th e first moto over Bealer. It boiled down to the final moto. Bealer, the " O ld Man ," passed Davis with a few comers to go. A rider in the Veteran class made it difficult for Davis to get aro und him and Bealer headed for the ch eckered flag . With th e finish stretch Davis went for broke and gassed it. H e almost tagged Belaer, but not quite, and unfortunatel y, h e flipped his Suzuki on the fin ish line. It was Bealer, Davis and Salisbury overall. The Sidecar race added something to the regular line-up. The fin al moto saw a four car pile-up, wh ich was abou t a third of th e class. Everyon e got underway with Pete Whitney and Perry Melillo taking the win. Overall th e team of Tom a nd Scott Whitney took th e top honors over Pete and Melillo. Phillip and Pete Palfreyman placed thi rd. About half the field of riders were made up by Whitney and Palfreyman fam ilies. To identify them you were much saferj ust to use th eir car number.
