We were p retty even on th e flats, spe edwise; the mud h ills was where I pi cked up my time." Out of th e desert th ey came to the delight of a screamin g cro wd. Ash craft was flyi n g; Roeseler was rid in g hi s rear fend er. Ne it her r ider gave a n inch; ove r th e big jump, both rid ers were 30 feet in th e air a t the same time. Into the last tu rn, Roeseler came in on the inside goin g for it wit h bo th bikes wid e open. The finish flag dropped with Ashcraft's fro nt whee l a ba re ha ir ahead of Roeseler's. Ashcraft said, " I gave th at last lap everything I had. When Roeseler was right on me in the turns, I figured n o way was I going to hold him off." It was a Husky day, and the tea m congratulated Ashcraft and fellow ri ders. Scott Pfeiffer pulled in third about fo ur m in u tes later. H e had a clean ride af ter Ma rt y Smith went o ut ; no o ne was near h im excep t lap ped riders. Ed Fo land led the 125cc Kin g class for a clear three la ps before seizi ng , givi ng Jamie T uc ker a clean shot. Bill Rea ms took th e Vet Kin g honor s aft er dicing wit h Pete Kinney. " I followed Kinney," sa id Rea ms, " a nd we bo th got los t. Wh en Kinn ey went o ff a drop, I was close eno ugh to see h im so I slowed and pick ed m y way down. After th at I didn 't see h im any more." The gran d o ld ma n, Dave Miller, pi cked up the Senior Kin g wi n. In no n-Kin g classes, Steve Basin notch ed the Open Experts, David Cox Open Amateur, Kir k Hester 125cc Expert, Roy Basin I 25cc No vice, J eff Bennett 250cc Novice, Ed Mu n dy Vet . Expert and Les Wolf Senior Ex pert. Ashcraft took home 10 $ I00 bill s, a . four-foot trophy and numerous co ntingency prizes for h is efforts. No nKing entry fees were divided among non-Kin g winners acco rdin g to entries in class.
