uthern Nevada- Southern Cali half of raci ng. As th e Krau se/Poli ce Kaw cont inued to fall back in the early laps, Norm Benedum pulled into a solid third o n a n 850 Moto Guzzi that he and Frank Sortelli shared, but he had to edge out a beautiful little 480 (oversized 400) Honda ridden by th e Rocky Cycle-sponsored team of R ick Witte and Willie Lieberman. At about 20 minutes into the race (lap 18), Ron Ares com m itted cycle a buse by sliding his 750 Kawas aki a few feet down the asphalt on th e hairpin; a long push back to the pits and lots of feverish wrenching put partner Ro yce Flora back int o the melee 20-some-odd laps behind the pack. Back in the fast lane, Williams/ Prince pitted and Frew/Palmer regained the lead at th e 30 m inute mark, but the Suzuki only put up with second for nine laps. The Suzi held its edge for nearly an hour while the Benedurn/Sortelli 850 Guzzi swapped second with the Palmer/Frew 750 Kaw which, incidentally. had just been fitted with a new set of 4into-Z Maxi Pipes furnished by Monti Campbell. Wh en the Suz i pitted with only 30 minutes left in th e race, Palmer/Frew put on a rally that lasted the remainder of the event. ultimately losing first pl ace to th e more powerful Suzuki by only two seconds. Mick Frew calculated that two hours are made up of 7200 seconds, so losing first by only two seconds was quite a heartbreake r. T hird pl ace in the Open class was taken by the Renaissance Motors and Quadrifoglia sponsored Benedum/ Sortelli ridden 850 Guzzi . Through excellent braking into th e comers. it ga ve Palmer/Frew a real contest , but then was forced to co mp lete th e last 10 m inutes w ithout brakes.
