(A bove) Eugene Coward rece ives his PRRO nu m ber one plate. (Below) Greg Ayers (front) and "Radical" Bob Ott (black leat hers) pinch out Andy Northrup at Saddleback Park's new Sunday speedway races . And, it is in the second rnoto that Larry Brooks shines . Once in front, he seldom has stiff opposition and, su ch was the case this week in round four of the series. Bobby Moore (Yam), who last weekend scored a rare achievement when he passed Brooks for the lead at one point, found out that Brooks was not about to allow the same thing 10 happen this time out. He pulled into second place, but could make no more headway. Since he finished fifth in the first moro, it left him fourth overall. Brown fell back to a fourth, but still took second, just ahead of consistent Wild Willie Surratt. The unbeaten Brooks is the only rider in the Series with a perfect score of 80. He also leads his class in points by a whopping 31, with Surratt in second a t49 and Bro wn th ird at40. A Pro-Am trai ler is the top prize in this class. Seven ot her trailers are also up for grabs in the motorcycle classes a nd Texan Dan n y Storbeck (Yam) is well on his way to gaining ownership of one. This weekend, he roped his third series win and raised his series tally to 76, just four points shy of a perfect mark. Tyson Vohland (Hon) used a second place finish today to move into a second place tie in the standings with Kurt Henrickson (Yam ), who scored only a fifth. They each have 59 points. The closest class thus far in the seven week series is the 125ccJuniors, in which seven riders are within 12 points of each other with three weeks left. Mike Gilmartin (H on ) tops the class with 52, but he only finished fifth at Sunrise Valley . Joseph Crough (Suz) finished 10th, but is second at 46. Dale Himmelreich (Suz) is third at 44, taking fourth this weekend. Today's winner, Phil Butler (Kaw ), has 43, just one point ahead of Travis Ro berson (Kaw), who was runner-up this time out. The other two riders with 40 are Jeff Sills (Suz) and Mike Anteliffe (Kaw), who finished 16th and 32nd respectively. Other than Brooks and Storbeck, only three other riders who lead their series standings won this weekend. Abel Gayton (Kaw) took the Mini Junior Modified 12-16 and moved into a tie for first with Jeff Mabery (Kaw) at 47 points. Mike Pascarella padded his Mini Intermediate Stock 9-11 point lead with a win, and Dean Matson brought his score to 60 with a win in the Mini Intermediate Stock 12-16. Results Brooks, Storbeck stampede at Sunrise GSS By John Bethea ADELANTO, CA , JAN. 29 Larry Broo ks knows which moto to win. In the last three outings of the Preston Petry/ Continental Motosports Club Golden State Series, the R Be D Suzuki rider has lost the first Mini Expert moto, but won the al l-irnportant second event and wound up capturing the overall vicrory, It means thai on an overall basis, the young man from South Pasadena is undefeated in 1983. Today at Sunrise Valley Cycle Park, through moist track conditions, Brooks worked his way up to a second place in rnoto one behind one Kawasaki piloted by Scott Bro wn and ahead of two more ridden by William Surratt and Kyle Lewis. Brown's lead was tremendous, and the only way Brooks could have caught him was if the race was drawn out 10 many more laps. Brooks didn't try too hard to catch him; he a p pa rently knows full well that a second place in the first rnoto is virtually as good as a win because when added 10 a second race victory, it is a winning combination. 60 0-8: 1. Burrus Photo by Bill Enzweiler PHOENIX, AZ, JAN. 30 Phoenix Road Racing Organization today announced their top 10 riders for the 1982 season. Since P R R O standings are based on total club points earned during the year, consistency had as much as anything to do with the ranking. A DNF, after all , earns zero points even thou~h a rider may have burned up both his sled and the track for nine laps before coming to where the leather meets the road. Eugene Coward, riding a Street Machines prepared 550 H onda -tin 560cc Super Street class, finished most of his races last year and earned the number one plate for 1983. Teammate Norm Benedurn had the number last season, but it seemed 10 bring a little bad luck, and the best Norm and his 750 Honda cou ld do was to take the number nine plate for 1983 along with the PRRO GP class championship. Number two went to Sun Suzuki's Mike Williams, who rides a 1000 Suzuki in the Open Super Street class and who looks mean enough to play Pro football. In addition, Williams was named Super Street Open champ for 1982. Mike doesn't want the curse of a high ranking plate (ca u ses crashes), so he 'll run with his old number 44 this year. (Nobody around here wants 10 argue with him.) Not previously in th e top 10, Ron Ares rook the number three plate racing in the 400cc Super Street class, and Ted Gabbert (750 Super Street) traded his number seven plate for number four.
