H e contin ued his complete domination of th e 250cc P ro 'class ton ight at Corona Raceway. . At the start of the first moto of the 250cc Pro class it was McMahon who grabbed th e holeshot ah ead of H arl ey H all (Hon) , Suzuki Co untry's Duan e Ma pes (Suz) an d Riverside Suzu ki's Joh n Mazzacane (Suz), By th e end of the first lap McMa ho n had developed a sizable lead, while Ma pes ha d found a way past Hall, overtaking the second position. A lap later Mazzacane sn uck by Hall. Then Mazzacane found himself in second afte r Mapes went down. Mapes recovered quickly enough to reta in th ird, bu t.H all took advantag e of the stunned Suzuki pi lot a lap later by reca p turing th e third position. Out of nowh ere came Danny Barth olomen (Yam), who got off to a sixt h pl ace start, after p ickin g off one ri der after anothe r until he had positi oned him self in third m id wa y thro ug h the moto. With on ly three laps remai ni ng , Mazzacan e dropped out handing the second spot o ver to Bartholom en . Also making hi s wa y through th e field was J ack Scott (Yam), whoalso recovered from a fair start until he had overtaken fourth. McMahon took a swea tless win ah ead of Bartholomen , H all and Sco tt . Agai n, McMahon powered his Yamaha to the front of th e pack a t th e start of moto two while Scot t, Bartholomen and H all followed. Sco tt held on to his second position for two laps unt il Bartholomen snuck by. But u p fro nt - way up fro nt - was McMa hon . Dircks collects two Canyon MX wins By Pam Hardin PHOENIX, AZ., DEC. 12 Gary Dircks unpacked his new Hondas and packed up the 125 and 250cc Pro wins at Canyon Racewa y. Rincon Ra cing 's Scott Keyes dom ina ted th e 125cc Ama teurs, Stock a nd Mod ified, wi th I- I finis hes in both. La rry Noel, usu ally rid in g in th e Old Timers class, rode to two very co nsistent rides in the 250cc Ama teurs to take the overall. 125cc Amateur Albert Po tte took h is modified bike o ut to a first moto lead with Dave McGaffee a nd Mark Moen foll owin g beh ind. Moen took th e lead after on e lap while Keyes was on his way up after a bad start. Keyes slip ped by McGaffee and passed Moen with half the race to go. T heir two man show took them almost 15 seconds ahead of Tom Hunt in third, a nd the positions remained the same to the fin ish. Valentino tops Novices at DeAnza MX By Kit Palmer SU NNY MEAD, CA, J AN . 2 It was a points tie after th e completion of two motos, but Mark Val entino (Kaw) went home with the gold in the 250cc Novi ce class a t DeAnza Cycle Park. Both Val entino a nd J on Ell enberger (Suz) earned the same amo unt of points after two mo tos, bu t Val entino won the all- important , decid in g second mo to to capture th e overall. At th e start of mot o o ne, Ellenberger took h is Suzuki to th e fro nt of the pack followed by Valent ino, Mark Wiedeman (Suz), J eff Frandsen (H on) a nd J oe Steffen (Yam). The two leaders began to pull aw ay from the rest of th e pack, as Steffen found a £law in Frandsen 's def en se a nd took o ver fourth. The win was still undecid ed . Ellenberger held on for th e win a nd Val entin o a nd Wied eman followed. In the second moto Valentino found himself in fourth after the sta rt, but he soon wor ked hi s way into second, hot on Ellenberger's rear fender. The two were at it agai n, but, with only two laps remaining, Valentino snuck by for th e lead, win a nd overall fol lowed by Ellen berger, Wiedeman a nd Steffen. . Results PEE WEE : 1. Srekerand Hannah win on Hondas By Terry Whytal O RANG E, CA, J AN. 2 Newl y signed Honda teamsters Goat Breker and Bob Hannah each won their resp ectiv e Pro races today at Saddleback Park, Breker the Open Pro class and Hannah the 250cc Pro class. Ne ithe r -victor y was a runa way win as tough co m peti tio n kept the o u tco me in do u bt a t th is first Saddlebac k motocross race of th e new year . Breker 's ma in co mpetition ca me fro m Yama ha ' rider Jim Ellis a nd Honda -mo unted Steve Rh yan . Ell is provided most of the first rnoto dicing between th e lead ers, bu t DNF th e seco nd round to fin ish o ut of th e money. Rh yan took th e early lead in round two and Breker played ca tch- up for mos t of th e race before finally easing pas t th e form er 500cc Golden State Series cha mp . H annah controlled th e pace in the first round as Johnson a nd T arantin o a rgued over second and kept pressure on the Hurricane. Round two was more exci ting as Taran tin o powered to the early lead and held off the charges from Hannah and Johnson until the mid-point of th e moto. Hannah and John son finally slipped past Saddleback's top privateer rider and dueled for th e lead, wit h Han nah agai n taking the checkers first.
