Nbrth'ern'CalifOrnia~Northe'rtl-Ne adll·OI'1lg'drr-Wash1ngtdn-ld8ho-Utah-Alaska-Ca~ada· Northern California!Nonhern"Nevada-Oregbn=Washin9to ~-tdstio-Utafl " NORTHERN DATELINE Roberts steals t he show at CMC SHR M X By Bill Spencer BRENTWOOD, CA, DEC. 26 Post Christmas raci ng a t Sand Hill Ranch was bitterl y cold, but saw ri ders with sh iny new bikes and clothes, and even King Kenn y Robert s in a ttenda nce. T he three tim e former World Ch am p came to wa tch a nd ride th e Vet Expe rt class as he prep ares himself for th e com ing seaso n. The cro wd o n hand was enthralled with hi s efforts alt ho ug h he wound up having the sa me tro u bles he has on th e road courses - deal ing with lapped riders. In the first race of th e day Steve Ferroni was out to show off his new CR480R and led off th e Vet pack with Paul Bostrom and Roberts in tow . Roberts, never having been the kind to play it safe, banzaied the trooJ?s and within one lap, pressured hIS way pa st Ferroni and took his YZ250 to the nth degree. Ferroni wasn 't fraught wi th concern and laid back wh ile J erry Caton kept Hank Wessel's So Bay Suzuki at bay in the Intermediate class . As Roberts pas sed through the crowd on the firs t moto, it was like Laguna Seca , Daytona, and Sil versto ne. H e was blitzing either side of th e track and cra shed three tim es with traffic just getting in the way at the right time. Luckily, none of th e big wigs from Yamaha were around. On th e white flag lap, Ferroni cut the gap to in ches and, when Roberts go t the wrong line on one back marker, Ferroni got th e line a nd th e win. In th e second moto, Ferroni left no doubt about his desire to win and was never headed. Kenny has a tendency to a ttack everything and gave it hi s all , but it was just a little 100 much, too soo n. H is arms pumped up very badly and, with his kn ee still recovering from the ' Silverstone get-off, he wisely retired - amidst a gran~ salutation from th e cro wd. Ferrom won easily with Paul Bostrom in for second (3·2) on his Contra Costa H onda and Steve Bevilacqua third over Ken Shepp and Mike Men esini. Results VET EX: 1. Steve Ferron i (Hon); 2. S.I.R. under the gun By Lane Campbell SEATTLE, WA, DEC. 14-16 Once again the fate of Seattle International Raceway hangs in the air. In what has become an almost perennial event, local residents complaining of race track noise and disturbance have pressured King County into reconsidering th e track's conditional use permit. Hearings opened before King County Zoning Adjustor Irv Berteig to determine if the track's permit should be revoked for alleged violations of the permit's conditions during the 1982 season. Leading off was a roster of complainants, incuding the King County Police and th e prosecutor's office, attempting to "conviet" the track on the basis of th eir testimony. A small band of local residents , led by a Mrs. Linda Worden, 13445 S.E. 288th St., testified in tandem as to alleged curfew violations by th e track during night drag races (the prime source of the noise complaints). A critical issue in the whole proceeding is whether the county can or should-enforce a 9 p.m, curfew Q(') 00 0') S HR w inners Doug McRae. Mike .W halen and J erry Brandt rec eive top d ollars from Tom A nderso n. on nig h t d rag races, or a 5:30 p .m . curfew on jet car runs. It is th e track 's position that such conditions make it impossible to stage a major, crowddrawing drag meet ; and that without such meets to earn revenue, the track can not stay open for other diverse activities (including motocross and motorcycle road racing). The track operators in turn fielded a heav y lineup of witnesses including the manager of Portland International Raceway, who testified how that track operates as a revenue producer for the city , with full cooperation from local go vernment. He stated that although PIR is a publically owned/operated facil ity, it pays its own way without any public funding and turns an estimated $5 million annually back to the local business communit y. . Letters were presented endorsi ng S.I.R.'s compliance efforts during 1982. The state Liq uor Control Board expressed complete satisfaction with the track 's security (which compares favorably with other large northwest sports/ entertainment complexes that also suffer from severe contraband problems ). The State H ighway Department wrote that traffic on SR 18 past the track was well within design limits. The State Department of Ecology wrote that the track is exem p t from noise guidelines until it can be regulated under the provisions of state law. Following the track's formal testimony , score s of private citizen s testified on behalf of the track. Motorcycle safety advoca tes pointed out th e irreplaceabl e value of S.I.R.' s 2.25 mile roa d circu it as a rider trai ni ng/ testing and resear ch facility. J et car operators and drag racers testified to refute specific violations all eged by the residents. The attorney for the landowners of the tra ck sit e also ga ve strong testimony in favo r of th eir tenant, S.I.R. At th is writing, the county adj ustor's final decision has not been announced. Track supporters reco rnmend th at anyone wishing to speak on behalf of S.I.R .'s continued operation shou ld write: . The Honorable Randy Revelle King County Executive 400 King County Courthouse Seattle, WA 98104 McRae finale at SHRMX By Bill Spencer BRENTWOOD, CA, DEC. 19 It may be the end of the 1982 calendar year, but it was double points payoff time for those attending the Rocky Cycle/ Super Seer motocross today at th e ma rvelous Sand Hill , Ranch. Doug McR ae aced both rounds of the 250cc P ro battle to receive his overall 250cc title money along with Open Pro Jerry Brandt and 125cc Pro Mike Whalen. Mu ch of the current racing is centered around getting ready for the upcoming CMC Golden State Series and Old T imer Expert Rich Lokke showed up with his new CR480R Honda Peninsula bike. Lokke was ready for bea r and aced both motos with ease while Mike Heiberger never looked better with a 3-2 tally over Jack Lewis. Lew is ra n seco nd in the first round and was well on his way to another when he made a move reminiscent of the old Belmont da ys and slid out. Lewis went to the rear of the pack and even let Spank Anthony and Bill Verbiscio get by, I mean, really. McRae led out bo th 250cc Pro motos with Ken Klein and Larry Wosick doing th e chasing. Wosi ck made all th e right moves, but had trouble with th e throttle and front brake sticking and in the second round got off real hard; Wosick had to take the bad trip with a suspec ted leg injury. Don Clark made so me Iine moves in both motos and moved up to take two deu ces for second overall over Klein (3-3), Gary Fargo and Irv Achinger. Matt Elkinds won the first round of the 250cc Intermediate contest, but DNF round two wh ich put Don Hall in ch arge on hi s MR . Dave Montgomery got Pops a ne w Honda rid e and rode up and around for seco nd overall (2-4). Frank Valado (4-3) was th ird over Brett Laf ayette (5-6) and Claus Holm. J ohn Malco lm co nt in ued to ace th is track a nd won a pair of Super Seers in the process. Second 250cc Junior was Rich Will iams (2·4) over John Poigie a nd R.C. McBroom. Resul t s OT EX: 1.
