Dunham dominates DeAnza Beginners By Kit Palmer SUNNY MEAD , CA , JAN . 9 The largest and one of th e mos t exciting races of th e day was produced by the 125ccBeginner class today at DeAnza Cycle 12 Park. Wi th th e fin al wav e of th e checkered flag, it was Robbie Dunh am of Suzuki of Riverside who emerged w ith the number-one spo t. Mike Kessell (Suz) sho t h is way to th e front o f th e pack a t th e sta rt wh ile Gerald Reid (Ya m), Dunham and Mike Williams (Kaw) closely pursued . It took Dunham o ne lap to wo rk h is way aro u nd R eid and get a clear shot a t th e leader. Dunham snuck by Kessell during th e fourth lap and ga in ed _ a little bit of insurance, extendin g his lead with each lap. Williams m ad e his wa y past Reid for third. Dunham went on to take the win followed by Kessell . Will iams and Reid. Honda-mounted David Sharp grabbed th e second h olesh ot th en co lli ded with Kessell in the second turn. Fitzgerald flies to DeAnza MX win By Kit Palmer SU N N YMEAD, CA, DEC. 26 It took no time a t all for ex- 80cc class rider Mik e Fitzgerald (Hon) to get used to hi s ne w 125cc H on da mount an d blitz the Novi ces today at DeAnza Cycle Park . In bo th mo tos, Fi tzgerald ran away with th e win , but h e had to, a t o ne time o r anothe r, p ut u p with some st iff com pe tit io n . At the sta rt o f rn oto o ne Fi tzgerald shot to th e fron t of th e pack wi th Rincon Kawasaki 's Lance G orton (Kaw) an d Brad Fa y (Hon) ho t o n his tail. By the end of th e third lap Fitzgerald had ga in ed a few seco nds o ver second whi le G orton and Fay battled handlebar to handl ebar. Quickly, Fay o vertook the seco n d spo t, but wa s still some distance behind Fitzgerald. A few laps later , Robert Clearters (Yam) mov ed in to th e third spot, th en he set af ter an d reeled-in Fa y, engaging in a tight duel over second. As the two wer e battl ing, they were also gaining steadily o n th e leader. By th e time th e nag had ap peared , Fitzgerald had o n ly a few seconds lead over Fay and Cl earters. The second moto start saw Fitzgerald agai n roost hi s wa y into th e lea d followed by Gorton and Clearter s. Fay was nowhere to be seen due 10 a rock-caused hole in the cases of hi s Honda from th e previous moto . As Fitzgerald beg an stretch ing hi s lead, most eyes where fix ed on th e fight over second. Throughout th e moto, Cleaners kept h eavy pressure on Gorton hoping for th e slightest mistake by the Kawasaki pilot. However, Gorton rode smooth ly, keeping Clearter s a t bay. By la p two , Clark was in th e lea d a nd p u llin g awa y fro m Owen, who was no w cha llenged by Mike Raschke. Raschke moved up to seco n d o n the nex t lap, but C lar k wa s un car ch abl e and Ra schke took second j ust ahead o f th e thi rd running O wen . J ohn Condon and Dave Welty both jumped up o ne to run firs t and seco nd for two laps. H ensley began ridin g fran ti call y to get back hi s lost positions. In th e m eantime, Welty had passed Condon to ta ke fir st and hold it to th e end of the moto. By th e ti me H ensley was in position to p ass, he o n ly had time enough to get co n don and secon d pl ace. Moto two found Chuck Penny getting th e holesh ot o n division o ne, but Clark passed him alm ost im media tely. dragging Raschke a lo ng righ t behind him. The two of th em rapidly moved awa y from th e rest of th e pack for a repri se ' o f the fir st rnoto, Hensley aga in got the jump on division two an d Condon and Welty again closed in on him before the first lap wa s over . Hensley wa s not making any mistakes and held th e lead for four _ la p s (a ll second motos were cut by at least o ne lap ). In that fourth lap. Welty got by Condon and went after H ensley. It was a wheel-to-wheel battle throughout the last lap, with Welty nipping Hensle y just200 yards from th e checkered an d go in g in for th e w in and first overall. PRO 's Cr ystal Challenge and, after a one-lap joust with Lee Sc heffers, was never seen - a t lea st by o the r ra cers. T hey p robabl y co u ld n't see h is dust. " T hey" we re some of raci ng's h ea vy hitters: La rry R oeseler, Dan Smi th, Scot H ard in, C h uc k Miller , Mike Bak er , Kurt Pf eiff er , Ri ck Johnson and Craig Adams. H e'd been in 10th p ositi on a fter th e fir st loop, but had m oved to third . After three plus hours of p oundin g , th e ra ce co urse no longer resembl ed th e morning 's ride - th e long turn past pit row looked like the aftermath of so me war game. Randy Norman (Ya m) ca me thundering into this me ss a nd did a crash that should hav e been in th e get-orr Hall of Fame. It was in this sectio n that Rick Johnso n, d esperatel y trying to catch Ogilvie , h it a hard ridge . His machine went vertical , th e impact so hard that his sea t di slodged. flying out ahead of his bike. johnsorii " T h ose last co u ple of laps were tough, I'd never raced with no seat before!" Dan Smith had been as far down as ei g h th place, but kept his big Husky going, eventually to second overall. Back course spectators said that Smith and Johnson had quite a duel going for much o f th e long a fternoo n. Scot Hard in rode a stead y ra ce for fourth o verall. Toward rac e's end, it became app arent that unless something radical happened that Ogilvie would take no prisoners this da y. Near th e end of it . he turned a lap in eig h t minutes seven seconds - about 20 seconds faster th an one clocked an hour and a half ea rlier. One rac e buff walked off
