An interview with him begins on p. 18. Photo by Karel Kramer. BLM "Bait 8t Switch" I think that th e Federal Trade Commission should be informed that BLM has mastered " Bait and Switch. " Most people are aware that the Desert Plan designated Jawbone and Dove Springs Canyons as " O pe n" but all the land outside the ca nyons as "Limited" (designated trails onl y). Late last year they formed an OR V Route Advisory Committee of which I am a member. Then they sent out maps for the public to return with known routes, indicated, and they reviewed aerial photos of th e area . The result of this effort was a very complete inventory of all OR V routes between Jawbone and Walker Pass, each of which was assigned a number. The committee was shown a form that was to be used to determine the designation of each known route. All this " Bait" provided by th e Visitor Services staff was great. Now the " Switch" - the project was then turned over to th e Resources staff (Biologist, Botanist, etc.) hidden deep in the bowels of the BLM. I probably don't have to describe wh at you get when there is a bowel mov ement but I will. This one is ca lled a Draft Managem ent Plan and it says that you can drive your camper on all roads shown on th e Auto Club map plus you ca n have an ORV experience on all three of the fivemile Motorcycle Only trails. AJloOlher trails are closed . All this without even a review of the trails inv entoried for su ita bility. If yo u don't lik e th e BLM 's used car lot tactics or thi s lemon that they ar e trying to sell you , I suggest you wri te them' (BL M, l415A Norma, Ridgecrest , CA 93555) immediately and attend one of the yet to be scheduled workshops. JERRY COUNTS Canoga Park, CA P.S. Any contribution s to the Legal Defense Fund will be appreciated as we are trying to keep a ll land open to all rid ers. Oregon OTHG Nat'l In an effort to be recognized as a well -established club, th e Oregon cha p ter of the Over The H ill Gang will be sponsoring its fir st National OTHG motocross event July 10-1 I at Mulkey OHV Park in McMinnville, OR. We invite all Over The Hill Gang and Old Timer MX Association members and their families to their twoday event. Track conditions are similar to those at the Washougal National Motocross track, since both tracks are owned and operated by the same people. For more information, write me or call 503/658-5614. MIKE PERRY 14115 SE 215th Ct . Boring, OR 97009 British BOTT I am writing to ask your assistance in securing entries for an exciting new race to be held at Donington Park, England, on Aug. 28-29 this year. Donington Park will host the first European International Battle of the Twins Race on these dates, and wishes to invite riders from all over the world to compete in this event. A substantial prize fund has been established for the race, and preliminary entries received from the USA, Belgium, Spain and Italy, as well of co u rse from Great Britain. The requirements to participate in the race are very simple: the rider must hold a current international license, or obtain a special one-day international permit from his local Federation. The machine must be a four-stroke , have no more or less than two cylinders, and displace more than 500cc. There are no other req uirements. Prize money will be paid down to 10th place, and there will be two races , the first a 15-mile qualifying race on Saturday, Aug. 28, with the 40-mile main event taking place on Sunday, Aug. 29 in this important International meeting. Asponsor has already been secured for a National British Battle of the Twins series in 1983, subject to the success of this inaugural race. We invite riders from yourc o u ntry to write to me for a copy of the regulations and entry form if they are interested in participating. Entries are expected from the following marques: Du cati , BMW, Guzzi, Yamaha , Honda, Morin i. Kawasaki . Triumph, , . , ". . Yamaha and the Trans-USA In regards to the comments in the Papa Wealey column on Team Yamaha and the Trans-USA Series, I would like to clear up any rnisconceptions as to why we chose not to attend. For the past three years Yamaha and the other major manufacturers have asked that the AMA consider shortening its very long season in order that there be sufficient time at the end of the season to develop, test and otherwise regroup before the beginning of the next season. The only response to these requests has been to start racing sooner (Jan. ~O) and end later (Nov. 6). I can think of no other professional sport that has an I l-month season. In 1981 Kawasaki chose not to compete in the Trans-USA. In 1982, we chose not to compete. Budget considerations had no influence on our decision as we had made our decision nearly a year ago and so informed the Competition Department of the AMA. KEN CLARK Manager, Racing Department Yamaha Motor Corp. Cypress, CA Ught reply The following letter is in reply to Pat Zerr about her son Scott's missing motos. As a correspondent for Cycle News the past three years, I've been to enough races to know about scoring errors that take place. First of all it is my job to report the races, not to score them. Taking the blame off of me, which you put over my head, I went through the results for this year's Seattle Kingdorne race which in the results showed Scott outside the top 10. Be it right or wrong, like the editors stated, I go by what the promoters give me for results. Second, you stated that the Jolly Rogers Gold Cup race was incorrect. The fact is there was no story on the Amateurs submitted, due to the amount of work and third, S.I.R. results were posted and it seems some riders like to keep the sheets for souvenirs. So please don't put the blame on the reporters, who are busy all day writing and photographing. If you check many of the past issues, you 'd see that Scott has been in many of the S.I.R. and Thurston-Grays stories submitted by myself and wife Suanne.
