Now a five -ti m e wi n ner of the roughest a nd o ldes t hare a nd houn d arou nd, joh nson ea rned $700; first 125cc Expert Bill y Hill (Suz) and first 250cc Ex pe rt Kevin jones (Yam) eac h got $200 . H ill fin ish ed n inth ove ra ll, an d j o nes was fourth. j ohnson led a group of a doze n rid ers 10 th e smoke bomb, and th is grou p began stre tchi ng o u t a lead o ver the pack o f 300 plus. Morgan started badl y a nd had 10 do so me serious passin g to ge t u p 10 wh ere joh nson was cullin g a trail. With 50 miles of th e roughl y 130m il e race still to run a t this point, Kevin jones took over seco nd, followed by Brad Strong (KT M), Don Fuller (H us), Kevin Welch (Mai), SCOll and Shawn G erber , both on KTM s, Robert Howard (Hon) , 12!>cc Expert Bill y Hill and finally Morgan. H e settled for 16th overa ll a nd n imh O pen Ex pert. Welch worked h is way up th e last 50 miles and m ad e it a 1-2 finish for Maico. Strong was th ird, j ones fourth overall and first 250cc Expert. The sta rt in g banner wa s dropped by the Phantom Du ck of th e Desert, Louis McKey. who is fighting 10 get th e Bar st o w -to- Vegas run back. McKey was given $2,300 by th e Sugarloafers M.e. o f Della 10 aid in th e battl e to keep so me publi c lands open for off-road use. Few co m p la i nts were h eard abo u t th e event. Kevin jones wa s running a strong second when he got o ff th e co urse on the last loo p and fell 10 fourth ove ra ll.
