Over 130 riders braved the desert heat in th eir attem p t to qualify for the championship race in Ponca City, OK , on Jul y 28-Aug. I. In the I25cc Modified Expert class, Ron !...echien was a ble to pull out a first pl ace. Lechien had a third place finish in th e first moto beh ind Drey Dircks and Mark Meredith after sampiing the desert soil. Lechien fin ished a sol id first in the seco nd moto, giv ing h im the overa ll win. Russ Winkler, competing in th e 125cc Interm edi ate class, was finally abl e to cap ture a win . H e pulled first moto hol eshots in both th e Stock and Modified classes, but both were redflagged because of injured riders on th e track and had to be restarted. H e was unabl e to repeat his performance unti l the second mot o of the Stock class, where he finis hed firs t with a large lead over th e rest of the pack. Jason Rincon, competing at Blyth e Rceway for the firs t tim e, captured a second overall in both the I25cc Intermedia te Stock and Modified events . The 83cc Expert class provided its usual thriIls for th e specta tors. Little Mik e H ealey showed th e older riders the way in the Modified class, nosin g o ut Kyle Fleming.
