Curtis Cannon won the first two races out of three and coasted home overall winner with a runner-up placing in the third race behind Arizona long-tow Bob Russell, who went home with a second overall. Pearsons hot at .DeAnza MX By Kit Palmer SUNNYMEAD, CA, MAY 16 26 Suzuki-mounted Jim Pearson took command today in the fast and furious 125cc Intermediate class at DeAnza Cycle Park. Pearson survived the sun's hot rays in both motos, taking the win each time out. The action began with the stan of the first rnoto when Robert Barnam (Suz) gained a slight lead by the end of the first lap in front of Ron Bechard (Kaw), Pearson and Doug Davison (Suz). By the end of the second lap, Davison had managed to sneak by both Pearson and Barnam, taking over the second spot. But Davison's charge ended early when he went down, dropping back to fifth. Pearson took over second spot and set his sight on Barnam. Near the halfway point, Pearson roosted by Bamarn for the lead. Meanwhile, Davison managed to work his way through the pack, eventually passing the fatigue-struck Barnam. .Davison narrowed the gap between himself and the leader, but Pearson held on to take the win. Tony Bienert (Yam) and James McGee (Yam) labored their way into third and fourth. Pearson jammed his way into the lead a t the start of the second moto while Barnam, McGee and Davisonfollowed. By the third-lap, Davison had managed his way into second, but Pearson had developed a safe but cautious lead. Pearson went on to take the win and overall while Davison settled for second. Bienen snuck by Barnam on the final lap, taking the third spot. . In 125cc Pro action, ScottWilkinson (Suz) took complete control after putting together two flawless rides . Wilkinson grabbed the holeshot in the first moto and ran away with the victory. Moto two saw Charles Osterday (Suz) clinch the holeshot, but Wilkinson had overtaken the lead by the end of the first lap. Wilkinson went on to take an easy win. John Rudder (Suz) took second overall after gathering a !I-2 combination while a 2-!I tally gave Osterday third. Results PEEWEE: 1. Oole SInOn lYam~ 2. Mike Menger (Sur); 3 . Chris Moen (Suz). MAY 14 Tonight, Canyon Raceway fans saw a Bob Russell triple header as he took victories in both the TT and short track mains and the trophy dash. In the Open Expert main on the TT course, four riders came together at the starting line, soon to be separated with the flash of the green light. Russell grabbed the holeshot and soon widened the spread between his first place spot and the battle for second between Tom Burcham and Pat Antonides. Burcham came through the victor in that battle to find Russell still in the number one spot. He soon shortened the gap and wound up only two bike lenghts behind Russell's first . The 250cc Expert main on the TT track saw the return of Guy Warner to the racing circuit. He took first right from the line and soon maintained a healthy lead on second place Dennis Parks and third place Mike Stewart. Parks and Stewart continued to fight it out while pulling far ahead of the rest of the pack. Warner came through with the win, Parks took second. and Stewart finished third. In the second Powder Puff race of the year, Patricia Freimark, Beth Franzen and Kathy Costello turned out to show their spirit as they lined up their racing· machines for the Powder Puff short track main. With one Canyon victory under her belt, Freimark again took the win. Results SHORT TRACK V·ZlNGERs: 1. Mike Aguirre; 2. MerIt Mo_rd. • PEEWEE: 1. Donny Voge,1t; 2. Mony VogorwI. . MINI: 1. Two for Turner at CMCAscotMX By Tom Corley GARDENA,CA,MAYI2 The days when "Radical" Ron Turner would sweep the Pro classes at Ascot are in the past, but tonight Honda-sponsored Turner returned to check out the local action and give the Pros a difficult time. Turner took home top money in both the 125 and 250cc Pro classes . Turner found the slippery surface difficult and took bad starts in both motos of the 125cc Pro class. In the first moto, Mike Beier shot out ahead only to fall in a corner before the TT jump. This mistake made it easy for Todd Peterson to jump into the first place position. Beier got his Orange County Cycle Yamaha going again and continued in second place. Radical Ron spent the whole time passing others. Ron finally slid by T&O Yamaha rider Tim Shelton and landed third. In the final moto, Eric Coffin took the start. Beier gave Coffin a lesson on how to pass in corners and maneuvered by. Shelton and another rider spun out in a corner, and that took care of them : Peterson had succumbed to the effects of the flu and was away in his box van . Turner went down at the start and was zapping the front-runners. He took care of Danny Westergaard and then chased Eric Coffin who was in second. Turner caught him in the corner before the finish and pulled him on the final stretch. With a 2-1 tally Mike Beier had a clear victory right? Wrongl In the Mini Junior Division Two race, Jeff Taylor fell hard and suffered a leg injury. He was still on the ground when the I25cc Pro final moto blasted off. A yellow flag was out and, apparently, Beier passed a couple of riders. The CMC had to penalize him. The top riders advanced one position which gave Turner first place in the final instead of second. A !I-I tally earned Turner the first place cash over Coffin and Kal-Gard rider Russ Wageman. Ron Turner took a more decisive win in the 250cc Pro race. Turner placed first in both motos after taking a good start. Honda West rider Doug Nicol came closest to Turner, which meant that Honda took the top positions. In the first moto, Todd Peterson took fourth but his sickness made him take off before the final event. . Pete Murray took his Maico to the third place cash over Gary Jones. Results 80 JR: 1.
