Lange visits PIR night MX winner's circle By Brian Barnes PORT LA ND , O R, MAY 20 Race number seven of Portland Interna tional Raceway's high point MX champion ship series went off wi th ou t a hitch again this week wit h Yamaha rider Doug Lange (R W Racing/MX Fox / Bel Ray ) visiting PIR's winner's circle for the first time this year in th e l25cc Pro class . . Lange looked very im pressive both motos o f the night, holding off fellow Yam aha rider Denny Fennel (MX Fox/Yamhill Yamaha) in each. In thefirst moto, Fennel got close enough a number of times to pass him , but couldn ' t seem to find a line that Lange wasn 't using and settled for second. jim R. Anderson (Kra use Ra cing/ Vancouver Yam aha) held off Suzuki-mounted Ric Burkinshaw th e entire moto for th e th ird spot, wi th Steve Smi th (Cycle World Honda ) taking fift h. In th e seco nd moto Fen nel and Lange dueled again, but Lange decided to put so me br eathing room between h imself an d th e rest of th e field, p ull in g away to a n easy win a nd h is first overall win th is year a t PIR. Fennel again was second, Hondasupported Sm ith took a stro ng th ird, Anderson was fourth, and Burkin shaw was fifth. Th e 250cc Pro holeshot found Smith a board his CR250R rocketing in to th e lead. Michlitsch was right there in second on his KX, and another Cycl e World Honda-supported rider , Arne Hettman, was in third. Mich litsch gai ned th e number one spot on th e th ird la p, but d isaster struck on the n ext as th e Kawasaki ace slid o u t going p ast th e tow er. The en tire field passed h im by before he co u ld get restarted. Smith was now leading again with D lie S Cycle Husky rider Ron Vande- hey h ot on h is tail. By the mid-poi nt, Cycle World riders Smith and H ett ma n were 1-2, but H illsbo ro Suzu ki 's Randy Hubbard a nd Cropper, who had both gotte n bad starts, had now moved up in to th e third and fourt h spots an d were cha llenging the leaders for the top posi tions. Cropper gai ned th e lea d wi th two laps to go hold ing on fo r th e win. Hubbard's gr eat ride ea rned him a sec o n d, displacing H euman a n d Smith to third and fourth on th e last lap , with Vandeh ey guidin g h is Husky into th e number five slo t. - In ' th e second moto there wa s no denying Michlitsch th e win. He led th e entire ra ce wire to wire, winning with lots of room to spare. Cropper, Hettman and Vandeh ey di ced th e en tire moto in th e n ext three spots with that order holding to th e finish. Manning cou ld n 't take th e lead away fro m Anderson with th ird to Kuest, fourth McGill and fifth Tremblay. Anderso n took over the lead on the seco nd lap, but the next tim e around we had a new lea der. Kuest was righ t there to sna p th e lea d up wlien Anderson DN F. Ellison a nd Marker battled over thi rd wh ile th in gs got interestin g betw een Manning a nd An dy j ames (Suz), 250cc Pro racing had Roby Bass (Mi ller Products/Hon of Spokane) off the line in first with Anderson, Tremblay , Kuest and Sco tt Ty ler (Devol Eng.lMai NW ) in pursuit. Bass yie lded to Anderson on the fir st lap. Bass rode steady in second with _ Tremblay th e sa me in third. Pos itions stayed th e same until the whi te lap flag came 'o u t, and Burgett had th e lead when Anderson bailed off. Bass al so got by but Anderson took th ird . Second moto was T yler 's as he launched h is Alpha off th e line. Warren Hi ckman (Yam). Kuest and Burgett were th e ea rly leaders. Burgett ca me from 18th to fourth with three laps to go, bu t ge tt ing aro un d Kuest wasn ' t easy . Tyler took th e win , but Burgett took th e overa ll . Tyler's fir st moto seventh ruined h is shot but did add to his already bul ging wallet. In th e O pen Pro cla ss, Bass bla sted th e pack wi th a h ol esh ot o ver T yler. Burgett , MacDonald , Lentz (Yam ) and Hi ckman. T yler got by for th e lead o n lap two a nd m anaged to h old o nt o it until the fifth lap when Burgett made a va lia nt p as s for th e lead. Burgett led until th e last lap wh en he went for a disappointing DNF, lettin g MacDonald take th e win, T yler seco nd, Hickman third and Lentz fourth. The final moto had Bass aga in tak e the ea rly lead on his Pro -Link with Burgett , H ickman , MacDonald a nd Sh ane Blood (Yam ) holding down th ose so important money spots. Burgett was ha ving a field day out front with MacDonald workin g into second and Don Knoblauch (Yam) third. Lentz, Art Key (Suz) and Bass gave chase making u p a fro ntal m id-p ack dice. Holmes and McRae battled for second, and Holmes took th e lead ea rly but ga ve it to McRae. Over 12 Modified Expert wa s led by Tony Flores (Yam) with Bob Moore running seco n d. Tony wiped out a ro u nd Chicken Coop corner, gi ving T yson Vohland th e lead followed by Bob Moore. Moore took th e lead wit h two laps to go .
