Cannon cops D-37ST , By Dan Mahony VALENCIA, CA, MAY 9 > With a Mother's Day move that caught many racers unaware, { District 37, with just a few days' notice, hosted a double- header at Indian Dunes. Being the day after the Ascot National, plus the Mother's Day plans of many, kept the riders away in droves. So many classes ran together tha t they looked like they were washed together in hot water. In what had to be the race of the day , the 500cc Combo short track, Allen Swett bullied his Honda up 1 from a rotten start and into the first b position of the eight-lap final. Sweet was up into fifth on lap two, past Mercury Morse and Mike Boyle on the next go 'ro und , and then absolutely stuffed Dennis Pinhero for second place on lap five and took off after leader Tommy Walton. The tum three move on Pinhero worked so well that Swett did it to an unsuspecting Walton with three laps to go and motored on to the win. Walton was second and Pinhero third. Under the moto-type scoring system, however, Morse picked off the first place Amateur trophy with 3-4-4 placings. Top Novice honors went to Morse's teammate Robert Walker. Sweet and Walton had earlier split wins in the first two races. Talented Curtis Cannon took the 11 trophy for the 250cc Experts with no problem over Ron Bell while Ken Barrow put his KTM to work to take home the Novice gold. Running along in first place at the end of the l25cc portion of the event was Brent Bowers. Rob Hassay led the eight lap final for four laps over Cannon, slipped to second, then crashed on lap six. Burning his spilled fuel off of the , racetrack brought the folks to the fences to see what was happening, but it was nothing serious - except for Hassay, who must now get a new gas tank.
