Three different Pro winners at CMC The Continental Mote-sports Club Ascott TT came off smoothl y , but th e rid ers couldn't put together their even- 24 ings as well since the resu lts co lu m n listed a d ifferent winner in each class. Pete Hames a lm ost doubled until a missed sh ift cost h im a position and the win. The hero from the week before, Roger Thompson, won th e 250cc Pro class. He shot off with th e lead first rou nd, losing it rather quickly to Chris Cannon and putting J immy Snow in th ird behind him. Cannon's hand went up, signa lin g trouble, as h e went over the jump, an d Chris was out wi th his chain off. Thompson had th e lead again, a n d th is ti me, no one got by h im . Ja y Lewis eased into th e seco nd pl ace bu t co u ldn 't catch Roger , while Da le L ew is a nd Snow swa p ped third around with Lewis taking it. Second race, it was Thompson start to fini sh ; Sn ow didn 't co me out, and Ca nnon was sti ll broken down . Lew is hung onto seco nd , th en came Dal e Lewi s and th e lo ne Intermediate ridin g with them, Mike H art. He was happy to slide into secon d wh en Hames m issed a shift in th e second race and held it for severa l laps until the checkered flag. Jay Lewis and Joel Wildham settled out third and fourth. Nakayama fourstrokes to V.O.T.E. • wIn By Curt Fesler VAL EN CIA , CA, MAY 16 The Valley Observed Trials Enthusiasts (VOT E) held a club trial a t T emplin High wa y tod ay. The degree of section difficu lty for V.O.T.E. T ria ls usually leans tow ard easy. but this tria l was a n exce p tion . VOTE member Joe Fasol a , assisted by Scott Annand and Greg Pa pazian, decided it wa s time to im prove th eir ridin g skills by testing th eir a b i lities o n more d ifficult sections. Twelve sections (th ree loops, !6 tota l sections) were laid ou t on a short loop, and every face t of tria ls im aginable (excep t snow) was incorporated. The trial wasa real learning experience for the Beginners and great practice for th e h igher cla sses loo king forwa rd to th e rounds at Donner, CA. The ru mor th at a lynch mob of Beginners was looking for J oe Fasola a fter th e first loop was dismissed as a vici ous rumor, as h e turned up alive and well after the even t. Winner of th e Amateur class was Reij i Nakayama (45 pts.l20 cln.), a recent 'welco me addi tion to VOTE, ridi n g a new H onda 200 trial s fourstro ke. Reiji wa s th e o nly rider on a 4-stroke. H e purchased th e new model Honda in J apan and shipped it here. U n fo rtu n a tely, Honda no longer exports th ese fine trials ma chines to th e U .S. Second Am ateur was H arold Ri ch (69/ 10) on a ! 50 Bul taco , and third went to G reg Papazian (84/ 7) on a!20 SWM. First place Novice was captured by guest rider Scott R iggs (106/ 6) on a !50 Bultaco. SCOll is making his move into Novice from Beginner and appears to be moving right to the top. Second place went to Mike Schlatter (Ill/4 ) on a !50 Bultaco , and third was Kevin Smith (1! 4/ I) on a !50 Bultaco. The first place Beinnger was new VOTE member Reynold Hicklin (47/15 ) on a 250 Suzuki. Everyone wondered how Hicklin became so proficient so soon until it was learned that he has an excellent trials area behind his house. Second place went to Marc Hoffman (55 /9) on his gleaming new !50 Ossa. The distinctive engine sound and the high ground clearance turned a few heads. It's good to see O ssa back on th e SoCaI tri als scene . . Third place went to Mark La rson (57/1 2) on a 250 Bultaco, The Senior Beginners (over !5) fielded three ri ders, and th e cla ss was captured by Bob "4-p ly" Morris (55/!) on a Bultaco. All prizes awarded th e victors were donated by Bruce Bernbaum and Howard Phelps of Bay Area Bultaco, Boyd Bernard of Burbank Yamaha, and Keith Mullen, the Italjet distributor. North captures Corona high chool MX championship By Kit Palmer CORONA, CA, MAY 14 A season full of high school motocross came to a close tonight a t Corona Raceway, and once again it was . North High School th at em erged victo rio us Only one tim e in th e past n in e years ha s North ever lost th e cham pionshi p, and that was two years ago when th ey fin ish ed second to Redlands. Al wa ys a contender for th e championship was th e school of Po ly which finished a respectable second while Cerritos finished th e seaso n in third. Contributing to North 's success throughou t th e year wa s James Conti. Conti tOJ;lped off th e yea r with style by winmng the 175cc Intermediate class. In the fir st moto, Conti settled for a second behind Redlands' workhorse Paul Herman. Conti held th e throttle wide open in moto two to capture th e win and overall. Consistent thirds by Redlands ' Lane Sprong was enough for second while Poly's Harley Lawrence settled for third. The sea son's winn ingest rider was Upland's Pat Weber (Suz) . Weber stole the show in both the 250 and 500cc Senior classes tonight by taking complete command of both rnoto s in each class. Always a threat to Weber was Ken Campbell of Moreno Valley. Campbell had to accep t second to Weber in bo th the 250 and 500cc Senior classes. Va Iter El icker (Yam) of Cerrito s co m bin ed a 2- 1 score to top the Mini Novice class wh ile North 's Andy Castro's (Yam) first rnoto win and second moto thi rd was good for a second place showing. A !-2 tall y gave Hemet's Tony Heine (Kaw) th ird. Steve West of Rincon Kawasaki roosted to victory in th e unattached 125cc Intermediate class after exploding to the front of the pack in both motos.
