Such was the case tonight at Corona Raceway. Taki ng adva n tage of th e excellent summer-like co nditions was Kawasaki -mounted Steve West. West had to work hard for the win in teh 125cc Interm edia te class after tangling with J ason Rincon of Rincon Kawasaki all night long. Both riders traded mo to victories, but it was West who won th e deciding second rnoto. It all began with the start of the first rnoto when th e 10-plus 125cc Intermediat es jammed int o the first tum , but it was West who showed everyone how it 's done by capturing the lead. Hot upon West 's rear fender were R incon, Donny Myron (Suz) and And y Kaplan (Suz). For the next two laps. Rincon began searching for a way past West. On the third lap. Rincon saw his chance and roosted by West, taking over th e lead. Kaplan, in the meantime. had also found a way past Myron for th ird. For th e remainder of the race Rincon managed to hold back West for the win. Kaplan took third while Myron settled for fourth. The sta rt of the seco nd moto saw West again grab th e holeshot wh ile Rincon, Ronald Hung (Yam) and Fra ncisc o Buch eli (Suz) trailed. Wet learn ed h is lesson from th e first moto not to let R incon by. So West held th throttle wide open. keep ing R incon at bay. Paul He rman , after getting off to a slow start, picked off eno ugh riders to claim the third pos ition. Kaplan worked h is way into fourth. In th e end. West managed to hold back Rincon for th e win. H erman settled fo r third wh i le Kaplan accepted fourth. It was a sleeper night for Suzuki suppo rt rider Don Griewe. All he did was win both th e 250 and 500cc Pro classes. But Griewe had a bit of a nigh tmare abou t one particular rider on a green motorcycle. That one rider was Rick Rodgers (Ka w ), who gave Griewe a tou gh time in th e first moto of the 250cc Pro class. Griewe grabbed the earl y lead , but Rodgers and Jack Scott (Yam) were peering down on th e Suzuki p ilot. At th e halfway poin t. Rodgers snuck by th e leader; but Rodgers slipped up on th e next lap, giving the top spot back to Griewe. Griewe took th e win followed by Rodgers and Scott. Griewe aga in stole the lead at the star t of the second moto wh ile Rod gers pursu ed in second. Bu t Rodgers dropped out mi dway through the race, handing G riewe the easy victory. Sco tt settled for second. A team o f Pee Wee riders came out to Corona Raceway to do battle under th e lights. David Ochoa (Yam ) put together two flawl ess rides for a I -I com bina tion . Second went to Kayle Leogrande (Yam) after he traded 3-2 scores with third place finisher Dale Smart (Yam). Finishing th e eveni ng in fourth was Judd Scanlan (Yam) . Results HIGH SCHOOL MINI SR: 1.
