Vet/OT thanks On behalf of th e Vet eran and Old T imer riders , I would like to thank th e Dirt Diggers North Motorcycl e Club for inviting u s to ride Hangtown Sportsman Day th is year. Motocross is traditionally a yo u ng man's sport, but a llhough th e youngsters go faster, th e intense effort a n d tremendous competitive spirit is just as strong in the Veteran and Old Timer classes. Many of these "older" riders were the pioneers of motocross in this area not too many years ago. It seems fitting now that they be included in th e "ep itom y" of the sport - Hangtown. MIKE WILCOCK Azusa , CA The project itself is located near th e town of Cas ta ic in Los Angel es County, an d will serve the needs o f off-road motorcycli sts in this fast growing a rea, a s well as provide a safe refuge for th e drag racing people from th e San Fernando a nd Santa Clarit a Vall eys. Presentl y, th ere is a tremendou s problem with street drag racing in th e San Fernando Valley . In all honesty, th e g row ing problem of drag ra cin g-related deaths an d accidents in th e Valley was th e original "driving forc e" behind the form a tion of Motor Exposi tio n. However, once wh at a ppeared to be an ideal site wa s located for safe a n d legal dr ag ra cing , it became apparent that th e acreage was much more than was required for a dra g stri p. At that time , th e sco pe of th e proj ect was expanded to in cl ude a motorcycle riding area, and th e proponents applied for some Slate " G ree n Srickie" monies to pa y for part o f th e motorcycle park. No fin al pl ans have presently been developed for eithe r th e drag str ip or the motorcycle park. I have suggested that the Valley Racing Association, Inc. contact interested motorcycle groups, including District 37 and CORVA. to en list their assistance in developing plans for the facility. I am also frankly somewhat amazed at the amount of controversy this project has caused because of inclusio n of a drag strip in a facility which will be only 20% funded by ORV monies. This year, the OHV Fund will provide 100% funding to the tune of $1,140,000 to acquire an area in Madera County where there are onl y 7.000 registered ORVs "in a three county area surrounding the project. Part of the a rea in this Madera Project will be used to stage boat races . In comparison , I think the Castaic project will provide a real benefit to the riders in the north Los Angeles County area and beyond. I hope this information will clarify some of the questions surrounding this project. Since I have become per; sonally in vo lved in trying to make this ORV park a reality, I am most interested in hearing from your readers regarding any suggestions to improve the project.
