Shelton, Peterson, Jones take Ascot opener By Tom Corley GA RDE NA, CA, APR . 7 The 13th season of Co n tine ntal Motospon s Club motocross a t Ascot Park kicked off tonigh t with th e largest turnout of racers si nce 1973. All o f th e local Pro s have been wa iti ng for thi s cha nce 10 win so me fast m on e a nd there was a y tough lin e-up o f Pros in a ll th ree classes. T aking home th e top money were Tim Shelton-125cc Pro . Todd Peterson-250cc P ro and Gary Jones500cc Pro . Peterson made an a ttemp t 10 win bo th th e 125 and 250<:c Pro classes bu t managed on ly th e 250cc victory, Kal- G ard 's Russ Wageman took the hol esh ot in the first l 25cc Pro moto, Ti m Lunde. j ust returned from a New Zealand raci ng trip a nd ri ding a Honda for Pacific Coast Spo reCycle, was bumping th e rear li re of Wageman 's Suzuki durin g th e first co up le o f laps till Wageman went down . Lunde took over th e lead and was ge llin g pl enty of pressure from Pr em ier Yamaha 's P eterson . At th e checkered flag it was Lunde, Peterson and Shelton. . In the final round LundeandJohn Chwastyk crashed in the first tum , and Lunde was lucky 10 manage sixth. Wageman secured the first place sh o t ahead of Shelton and Peterson, who tried his best to slide by Shelton in the comer before the finish . Both Shelton and Peterson had five poillls after twomotos of racing, but because Shelton had the better final moto score. he took the overall. Pet~rson placed second over Wageman and Lunde, who were all money winners. There were so many 250cc Pros that two divisions, a co nsola tion 'a nd then a final were nece ssary. Eddie Gauley was racing in Ihe mini class la st yea r, but he showed th at he kn ew how to handl e a bigger bike in the first division race. Gaul ey led it from wire to wire. Mai co rider Pete Murra y placed second a head of Ri chard Sands o f ST R . Ru ss Wagem an go t th e j u mp on th e pack in the second di vision, bu t just like in the 125cc class. Pros watch grand l.arson-y at CRC Dunes By Terry Rezek VALENCIA, CA, APR. 4 Motocrossers with the last name Larso n won every Expert class at the California Racing Club's Indian Dunes motocross. Visiting Pacific Northwest brothers Mike and better known Phil Larson were unbeatable.despitee£forts from Dunes regulars. The first Expert event was the combined 125 and Open class. which featured both the Larsons. Mike Larson might have been glad that these cla sses were combined. since brother Phil romped all over the 250 and Open cla sses. a nd he just ma y have decided to ride l25cc if that had been a sepa ra te event. Even so. the Pro cl a sses were clearly the victims. The Open Pros go t the front row start. a nd Phil Larson pushed h is big Honda into th e hol eshot a nd nat d is- . ap peared . The resl.of th e Open Pros came around bunched in a tight clump behind h im . Greg Zillerkopf a nd hi s Yamaha ca me o u t of that clump to run seco nd , but th ere was no ca tch ing La rson . Mark Gambetta moved u p 10 cha llen ge Zill erkopC. but he too ra n ou t o f ti me. Mot o two was a repeat for Larson. Cra ig Cole got a bell er sta rt on thi s o ne a nd Ldme around in second, fol lowed by Tra cy O swell an d Ma rk Gambella. Oswe ll moved [ 0 within a worn kn oby's dis ta nce o f Cole and bega n a p p lyin g- pressure. Gam bella decided that was a good idea a nd moved in behind O~well . nearl y getting by when Oswell bobbled mom enta ril y coming up ou t of the sand wash .
