Bast sweeps six at IMS By Scott Daloisio SAN BER NARDI NO, CA. AP R. 14 It' s as rare as a no-hitter or a triple play in bas eball , but tonight, " T he Babe Ruth " of American sp eed way, Michael Bast, scored th e elusi ve clean sweep, go ing six for six a t joh n LaD ouceu r's Inl and Mot or cycle Speedway. Ba st. ridi ng th e j us tice Brothers/ Cod y Produ cts j awa, ha d dr awn the number three spot for the Scra tch main af ter winnin g hi s five previous races on th e ni gh t. The wily vetera n q uick ly ga ve Dave DeTem p le (Da le's Modern Cycle j aw a ) a speedway les'so n as he su ckered the tal ented 20yea r-o ld th rough th e tapes and into a di squalification. This left Bast with " Dan gero us" Dubb Ferrell (Vera's Leathers/Drew Construction j aw a ) in the number two spot and polesitter Mike Curoso (KEZY Weslak e). Curoso su rp ri sed everyone when he got the gate over Ferrell and Bast, who until that time seemed like he could do no wrong all night long. Bast stayed on the outside and pulled alongside Ferrell for the first -rw o laps. It looked as though Curoso was headed for the victory that would have put an end to the sweep for Bast. Coming out of four on lap two, Bast pulled even with Curoso, a nd by the first turn on the third lap, Bast was putting the finishing touches on his masterpiece night. Bast opened up some breathing room which he maintained to th e checkered with Curoso holding off Ferrell for th e runner-up spot. Bast's Scratch win put the capper on the fir st clean sweep at IMS in many a moon: Bast started the H andicap main on the 40 as usual. What wasn't usual was the fact he hid World Champion Bruce Penhall (Bel-Ray/Off Shore Weslake), john Sandona (Cody Products/Rialto Truck Parts Godden) and Mike Faria (Cycle G ear j awa) , alongside him on the start. Kurt Strom mer (Mt, View Foreign Au to Weslak e) o u tdueled jim Law son (D.j.'s Ti cket Service/ Pa rt s Plus j awa ) from th e 10 a t the sta rt. Bast got o u t fir st from th e 40 which au tomati cally put h im in third with Penha ll blastin g by rin th e cu shion in tu rn th ree on lap one. Ba st returned the favor in turn two o n lap two , and th e two ride rs with n in e Na tional cha m pio ns hi ps betw een th em traded the sho w spot back an d forth a number o f times until they hit th e traffic. Bast go t by La wson first on th e back chute o n lap three wit h Penhall , wh o was p lo win g through th e heavy stuff on the ou tside. getting Law son for th ird in turn th ree o n the same lap . Racin g lik e mad men , th e dynamic duo th en set their sigh ts on Stromm er and th e lead spot. Stromm er li ked runn ing up front so much he decided to fight two of th e biggest speedway sta rs in th e world for it; It was act ua lly a good fight with Strommer stayin g in the lead until Bast wrestl ed it aw ay a t the white flag . Once out front, Bast was gone. Penhall th en had to deal with Strommer and didn 't get by for second until turn four on the final lap. Strommer came home a very well deserved th ird followed by Sandona, Faria and Lawson. Shane McDonald (Omni Welding/ Cycle Service jawa) was the initial leader in th e Second Div ision main. Fellow zero- yard-line sta rter Wayne Leutz (S&S Const. jawa) copped the number one spot from McDonald in turn two on the opening lap. Leutz began to open up a lead and looked as though he might go on for th e win until th e freight train that was carrying Guy Ermolenko (Gaton & Dillon jawa) to Fi rst Division broke from the pack. Ermolenko forged by for th e lead on lap three and immediately began to run away from the pack as he rode to hi s second Division Two main event victory of the season a t IMS. Leutz came through for second with Shane Haw ley (Hendricks GMC/Cal Coventry jaguar Weslake) an d Dennis Abbott (KalGard/jones Goggles jawa) getting by McDonald on lap four for third a nd fourth. McDonald wound up fifth with Don Bovee (O 'Neal's 76 jawa) getting the wrap-up spot. Super rookie Bob Ott (Jaw) battled all race to take the victory from Randy Blevins (Hancock Design/Grin jawa). In the Third Division main Blevins got a great start and led Ott into turn one. Canadian Kenny Hansen (Kimat/Hansen Godden) got by Ron Blanton (Castrol jawa) for third on lap two with Blanton getting back by on the next circuit. Ott chased Blevins the entire distance and nipped him (two out of three judges ruled in Ott's favor) at the line in one of the tightest ever Third Division finishes. Blanton held onto third followed by Kenny Bencheck (Wes), Hansen and the always exciting Mark Rotondo (Championship Racing jawa) who pulled out his kill switch at the start. Trinon Cirello did a masterful job of holding off Bobby Cody and jordan Duncan to win his second ever IMS junior main. Cirello led wire io wire in the exciting main after he had defeated Greg Hancock in their heat race . Following Cirello, Cody and Duncan were defending National junior Champion Ronnie Corey, Dave Busby and Hancock. By Bill Locey VE NT URA, CA, APR. 13 The World Champion returned to th e Ventura Raceway for the first time in a year, and in a night filled with great racing, he not surp ri sing ly won the Scratch main before nearly 1500 fans. Shawn McConnell rod e twice as far a nd twice as fast a s eveyone else as he took the Handi cap main in a daring displ ay of outsid e riding. Unlike 1980, wh en it seemed there were never en ou gh riders up her e to fill th e progr am, there were so many riders here tonight that longtime regular and favorite McConnell didn't get a Scratch ride. He took out his a g g res s i o n in th e Handi caps . Although he didn 't win his heat race, McConnell set the tone for things to co me by riding hard on the outside but lo sing a close one to Eddie Ingels after a five lap battle. Penhall passed three riders in one tum and finished second behind Steve Lucero in his first ride. . Again go ing berzerko in th e no man 's land o n th e outside, McConnell got a good last comer and nipped la st week's winner, Dennis Bransford , a t th e line in a sem i. Penhall got , b~ried. beh ind .L u cero, and, C ~e. '
