Several top A riders, including ISDE gold meda list Chip Howell , D-38 numb er one La rry Wo odruff, D-38 number two john Ow en , CRC n urn ber2 Vet T om Co leand D-38 number o ne Seni or Al Nourian burned th e finis h chec k of loop o ne. All rid ers ci ted th e lack of a 20-m ile marker , whi ch is agai ns t D-38 end uro rules, as the reasonfor the co m p la int a bo u t th e chec k's m ilea ge. Th e club said th e mar ker was knocked down but n o riders on the first rows reme m bered seeing it. Re-m il eagin g from the 15m ile ma rk er lat er proved the check wa s off a lmost , b ut n o t q u ite, I1 10th o f a m ile. T he check stayed in , cost ing Howell th e ove rall. Loop two went out towards the sand hills before turnin g back towards horn e by wa y o f th e rocky mesas a n d tight ca nyons . T he same fire roa d used in loo p o ne was used to lead th e rid ers back to th e fini sh . Ag ain th e tie-breaker chec k was on this roa d. O n ly a few made the tie-brea ker on time in min ut es a nd seconds. The sta rt and first co u p le miles of the th ird loo p was the sa me as th e first, exce p t th e tra il led stra igh t u p the wash in stead of cutti ng off and p icked u p th e end of loop one and proceeded backw ards. Some new, difficult terra in was ad ded in to ma ke thi ngs interesting and scrub o ff so me points. A section evidently used for man y desert races fini sh ed out the loop. Yamaha-mounted Howell posted fast time on the third loop but lost the o vera ll wh en he burn ed the first loo p finish. Even so, Chip ca rne in fourth o vera ll.
