COST A MESA, CA, APR. 16
The stands were packed tonight
at the O range County Fa ir grounds to see the 1981 World,
National and Sta te Champ ion ,
and on e ha lf of Wo rld Best Pairs
Champion - Bru ce Penhall.
Bruce's first race ou t he showed
everyone why he's th e best . From the
50 -yard line, passing the entire field
on th e ou tside (which simply isn't do ne
at Costa Mesa ), Bruce took the crowd's
breath away with what had to be th e
most spectacular ride in years .
The match race promised to be
good with Mike Bast versus Penhall,
With Bast on th e inside , they flew out
of the gat e, and Bast's engine died in
the first tum. On t he nex t try , his
engine died in the last tum of the last
la p, bur the crowd wanted an entire
race , and that 's what they were to get.
Next attempt , Penhall cam e ou t first
and held on to the lead for th e win .
They even went an ext ra lap for. good
measure .
Pen ha ll's final glory came in the
Scratch ma in . Starting from th e num ber two slot Mike Curoso shot out first
for th e lead with Penhall and Bast
behind him and Faria in back. T he
order stayed the same with Cu roso
riding smooth in front of Penhall and
Bast. But , Penhall was paient and
waited for his tim e. On the last lap in
tu m twO,CUTOSO moved ou t just a little
wide , and Pen hall slid in righ t under
him for th e number one slot and th e

WIn .
There was. plenty mo re action with
the Third Division main . With four
riders on the zero -yard line and two on
the 10, it looked like a Scr at ch race
with a match race behind it. Bob O tt
and Ken Willi ams collided in the first
tum , and on the rest art Wayne Le utz
made his move and stayed strong with
Bart Onasch ta king second and Steve
Flaniga n fin ishing third.
Second Division main actio n started
with Tom Hugh es on a roller wh ich
cancelled th e first lap and pus hed him
back to the 50 . O n the restart , Wes
Ra ndolp h , Ed Castro and Pa t Hawley
went down. Andy Northrup go t tak en
out for ca using it.
Next try , Castro and Hawley almo st
ate it again while Randolp h jumped to
the lead : Dennis Ab bott too k second
and Tom Hughes finished third,
passing Hawley as he went do wn .
The Handica p main was everything
it promised to be except for one big
surprise. .. T om Burba . Tom had a
strong sta n when Cu roso went do wn ,
Phil Gagnon and Jan Balla rd cr ashed
in tu m one, and Penhall did a nice lay
down . Everyon e res tarted though they
had to peel Gagnon's bike from
Ballard's. T he ga te flew up , and again
Bu rb a came ou t strong with Balla rd
and Gagnon behind . Working his way
through , Penhall slid up under
Gagnon and next la p past Ballard .
Curoso squeezed into third on the last
lap, but by then Burba was just too fa r
ahead to catch, and he took the win
with Penhall second and Curoso third.•
