Ask Pete Keller about that. Pete ca me o u t srnokin' in the I25cc Expert main and wa s holding a slim lead over number one plate Darrell Murphy and "Rapid" Rodney Reynolds (250cc number one plate). Keller slipped a bit, got passed by both Murphy and Reynolds , and (don't it always happen just when yer tryin ' to catch up?) ate it. Just wait till next week ! Huh, Pete? Pete's boss, Dick Rockrohrof Cycle Nuts and Bolts, rode Pete's Honda to a solid third in the 125cc B event. Another CN&B employee, Al Larson, showed some class by staying out of the way after a slide out took away his chances in the main . The 250cc Expert mai n featured 10 transfers from the heats and semi. Lew Alter, riding a CN&B Bultaco, wasn't quite up to it for th is race and fell behind early. Sentimental favorite Denny Lee (Yam) had to restart his semi three times to get here, and it turned out he finished fifth or so. Up front, Arnie Wick, all the way from O s b o r n e in nort h Id a h o , " wicked " it on to take home the 250cc money for the second time in as many races. Arnie was not without competition from Rick Henson and Rod Reynolds, however. And, finishing a decent fourth was motocrosser Mark Olberding. Wickdidn 't have such an easy rir. ; in the Open Expert main. Lew Alter, Jr.•on a Honda 500 track bike, showed 'em why he's number one around h ere. Lew was cool and consistent while Wick bobbled a corner, and Jerry Moore (Hon) a lso made a sma ll error which took him out of contention. Short track races are won and lost through miniscule mistakes. Moore had whupped the "pass of the night" on Alter in their heat race earlier. however. He came inside where th ere was no room, made.some, and motored away. It was beau ti ful. Results PP: 1. DeeDee Ash ley (BSA): 2. M itzie Drishell (Yam): 3. Lois Harph am (Yam). PEE WEE: 1. A Smart Hollister • win By Bill Spencer HOLLISTE R, CA, MAR. 14 It was a smart Charlie Smart who took home the wi nnin g brass at the ann ual Los Gatos M.e. hare scrambles, held on the upper ranch of Hollister H ills O H V park in very muddy and wet condi tions, after Pat Bro wn wh iskered a p lug and had to wait for a wre nch to get it fire d. T he origi nal course was to have been over 14 mi les o n th e grassy slopes, but af ter a har d storm overnight, was shortened to 12 miles leaving out the famed John Frazier hog bac k downhill. It was likely a good thing, too . T he three row start for the two and a half hours early session including the Open Experts a nd Juniors in the front, followed bv Old Timers and Veterans and then the 250 and l 25s. At the shotgun blast, it was Katy-barth e-door in an ever present drizzle wi th Conrad Stitser just ahead of Bro wn and his SK Cycle Maico. That battle was a three-man affair for the first half with most of the track a well used model. The ou.going trail led over the hill climb area, down along the pit creek and over th e hill to the motocross area. Following some of the fire trai ls were lots of downhill that spelled doom to many. Almost 30% were out befo re the first lap was done, showing th e difficulty of the slime. Just past the 28-mi nu te mark, Bro wn sai led through the co unters with a lead on the troo ps o f over a mi n ut e. Smart, John Haak er an d Bob Windham were all close with Charlie Halcom b trying to move up ' after about eight crashes. At th e 32m inute mark, Gary Vanderpool came through as the firs t Vet Expert. All the fi rst five were covered so bad ly with m ud that they had to be stopped to rerord the nu mbers o ff their Coors jerseys.
