, UNBELIEVEABLE • T he seco nd la p arou nd saw Bro wn stop for fu el and sti ll go out wit h a two-minute lead over Halcomb, Smart and Jeff Irwin. Stitser had suffered ma ny fall downs and had dropped back while Pa u l Bostro m had fallen so hard, he had knocked himself out and was in the bushes for a few mi nutes. He came through a lmost 20 minutes off the pace while Vanderpool stopped for fuel and still got out al most one and a half minutes up on SCOll Davis. The race was now down from about 150 to 30 riders as Brow n came through to start his fourth lap with a two-minute lead on Smart who was moving up well and not falli ng a lot. That almost seemed to he the key, fi n ish well by not falling. It wasn 't a matter of goi ng fast , it was simply going. T he la p times increased as the . constant ra in muddied up mailers. Va n derpool and his Hi -Point/ Sou th Ci ty KTM came th ro ugh on lap th ree with a six-minute lead , and in th e top 10 overa ll , while Davis stopped with a flat tire and was ready to quit until a crew from Iron Horse Cycles begged, borrowed and put him back in the hunt. Bostrom came through just in front to take over second by a minute with Davis all pumped up and wheelieing out of the pits to try and regain his spot. At the two hour and 10 minute mark, Brown came through for the start of lap five. The fun was to watch how many could get through the time mark, or who would want to and not just wait for th e chec kered to appear. Some 32 minutes back was Smart on hi s Hi-P oint Yam aha with Halcomb a bo u t a nothe r minute back a nd less th an th at wa s Ir win who had hi s g lasses cleaned. Vanderpool was expected a t this mark to be th e on ly ot her guy 10 get in on the five laps, or want to, but he never appeared fro m the co u rse, wa lk ing in wit h the ignition gone and a very disappointing DNF instead of a sure win. O ld Timer Expert Ray H inso n rode his Sluice Box/ND KT M in. vow in g not to go a nother lap a nd th en rode across th e checkered for a third in class . At th e appropriate tim e of 36 min ut es, figu red for the last lap, it was a no-show for Bro wn. Smart took th e accolades for first overa ll o n hi s Sierra C ycl es YZ490 .
