Howard McCasland, another Honda rider . look second overall. There is no doub t about it : this is the year of the Honda. The start was fast, dusty and by 10 a.rn , the riders were rea dy 10 go. When the banner went up, many riders pulled some club ban ners OUl of their jerseys that h ad been " collected" Sarurday n i g hr , As rhe b a n n e r dropped, these riders wished to bring these banners tha t they had lied around th eir neck s in for a first ove ra ll. McCasland was third with Scheffers a t this po int running fourth , The Novice/Beginner stan was wild a s u sual , and everyone o f these guys ra n th e bomb run full throttl e! Two miles pa st th e bomb, it was Andy Mathews, a 250cc rider, wit h the lead and Ri chard Stuetzel (250) second. Hard charging Ron Shuler was third a nd first Open rider. The first lap had a lillie o f everything - bottlenecks, sill beds and a rock hill with riders all o ver it tr ying 10 somehow fin d a way through th e downed riders . As th e riders came through home ch eck after th e first lap, i t wa s Sch effers a nd his Honda in the lead. Ken Upp (KT M) running second (bo th Open riders ). McCasland was third, and Dan Smith had moved up 10 fo un h overall. First 250cc rider wa s h ard ch arging Cliff Thomas. . Gary Charters, as usual , was first Sen ior Open rider. First C bike wa s Paul Palmer. Bill Saltzman was fir st Vel Open rider. First Amateur into home ch eck wa s Jeff Bennington, ha ving an excellent ride today! First Senior 250cc was Dick Postma turning in another great ride. First Novice C was SIeve Kli en . H ard charging Lori Farmer was first girl in and OUI of home ch eck. The last lap wa s more of the same, o n ly more dust, dust, dust as Paul Kelly put it. With sill beds , where visibility was poor 10 say the least and riders were being lapped, the leaders h ad th eir work cut out fo r them. Passing other riders was . at limes, next 10 impossible. As Dan Smith said. you couldn't get far enough off the course 10 gel OUI of the d ust, and trying 10 pass was difficult, Scheffers was loving the ride h is Honda was giving him and with a comfortable lead, he just rode hard and came in 10 take the checkered fo r his first overall win. L ee said he had an excellent ride and had no pro blems. Lee couldn 't believe the great ride he had today, He wish 10 thank his sponsor. Hemet Cycle Center. for their SUPP0rl and was glad 10 give them a good ride. McCasland moved up to the number two spot after Upp d ro p p ed OUI on the second lap with bike problems. T hird was Dan Smith (Hus), Gary Chaners was first Senior O pen rider across the finis h today at fo urth overall. Fifth was Steve Subith in his first desert race since 1979. Sixth was a C bike with Pau l Pal mer aboard. Seventh was anothe r C bi ke. Tom Elias. These lWO riders really turned in a good ride today. . Eighth overall and first 250 was Charles Ba rney. Ninth was Do n Walkins,Jr. Ro und ing out the to p 10 was Mike Mulconery riding OUI of Tracy 's M .C. in Glenda le . With Gino's help in keeping his bike in top running condition, Mike has been having some good races la tely , First O pe n Amateur was hard riding Mark Molina. Finishi ng right behind Mark was another Amateur, John Sarrall . First 250cc Amateur was J ack T rottes, Fi rst Vel Open was R ich ard Jackso n. Fi rst 250cc Senior in was Dick Po stm a.
